The City of Raleigh is seeking a devoted Civilian Traffic Investigator . This position is primarily responsible for the investigation of non-injury motor vehicle collisions within the corporate limits of Raleigh. Work involves responding to calls for vehicle collisions; conducting preliminary and follow-up traffic investigations of collisions that result solely in property damage; traffic control and enforcing ordinances. Employees perform assignments directed by supervisors and the police communications center. Work involves independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in performing assigned duties.
Routine assignments are operational, however, may include special projects, specialized assignments, and assignment to other police divisions. Work requires extensive contact with outside agencies and the general public and may be conducted under hazardous situations. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through direct observation of work performance, and through review of written reports.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responds to assigned calls for service involving traffic problems, parking issues, and other traffic concerns
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of traffic collisions (excluding collisions resulting in personal injury)
- Interviews persons having potential knowledge or information concerning investigations being conducted.
- Collects, packages, and preserves physical evidence and found property of investigations. Prepares written reports and field notes of investigations.
- Testifies in court concerning investigations
- Provides traffic control at the scene of fires, disorders, demonstrations, natural disasters, and related incidents to ensure public safety and the efficient delivery of emergency services. Provides traffic management
- Assists victims of traffic accidents
- Performs rudimentary first aid as required
- Performs community service functions, including Community Relations presentations
- Provides the public with information on ordinances, regulations, and police services
- Enforces parking control ordinances
- Performs special assignments as directed
- Be capable of working rotating shifts
- Operates a vehicle during both the day and night under a variety of conditions

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High School Diploma or GED
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
