Job Description

This is a non-supervisory, non-sworn clerical and manual position providing custodial control and maintenance of security for physical evidence and other properties in the possession of the Raleigh Police Department. Work includes the receipt, storage, control, and custody of all police evidence / found property. Work is performed in accordance with state and federal regulations and Department directives and with some independent judgment and initiative necessary in the completion of assignment. Work is reviewed through records, inventories, and observation of the efficiency and quality of work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Catalogs, receives, and stores evidence and found property
- Data entry
- Maintains custody and control of all evidence and found property and the associated records, which includes, but is not limited to currency, firearms, and narcotics
- Deletes items from the computer, according to procedures and as directed by court orders
- Maintains evidence and found property control files
- Checks evidence in and out of controlled area to officers for court and investigations
- Presents evidence and testifies in court trials as required. Renders assistance to the public in recovering stored property
- Conducts inventories of stored evidence and found property
- Acts as liaison with Law Enforcement Agencies, such as the United States Secret Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, FBI, CCBI, SBI, DA's Office and North Carolina Department of Revenue for evidence related matters
- Transports evidence to the State Bureau of Investigation Lab and City-County Bureau of Identification Lab for analysis and testing
- Picks up and returns items to the central evidence room and maintains custody files related to this process
- Transports evidence / found property from district stations to central evidence locations while maintaining constant control of chain of custody
- Disposes of evidence per court order or other legal authority
- Enters firearm data into ATF online E-Trace for all firearms received into evidence and found property
- Oversees the test firing of firearms received into evidence and found property
- Oversees currency verification
- Operate a vehicle during both the day and night under a variety of conditions
- Rotates on call schedule
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience in inventory control, property management, operating office equipment, and maintaining files and records
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
