Job Description
The City of Raleigh is seeking an experienced Senior Associate City Attorney to join our dynamic legal team. In this role, you'll be at the forefront of a wide range of legal matters, primarily focused on real estate transactions. You'll provide a broad range of legal services to the City Council, the City Manager and City Officials and staff in the conducting of City business. You will also supply formal and informal legal opinions and drafts a variety of documents, ranging from a low to high level of complexity. As the ideal candidate, you will possess experience and knowledge of commercial real estate and transactional practice.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Represents the City in a variety of transactional matters, including contracts development and negotiations and commercial real estate development.
- Provides a broad range of legal services related to municipal operations as directed by the City Attorney.
- Participates in problem-solving on a variety of City issues and special projects from the legal perspective, interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations.
- Serves as a member of a team of highly experienced professionals in a dynamic law office setting.
- Researches a variety of legal issues and provides legal advice and direction to City representatives, who may include the City Council or City Departments.
- Works with City Departments in providing day-to-day advice on departmental operations. May serve as lead attorney to one or more assigned City Departments or Offices.
- Displays solid level of expertise in transactional practice.
- Reviews and assists in the drafting of changes to the City Code and provides advice relating to interpretation of the same.
- Reviews and drafts contracts and provides legal guidance to City Departments in all phases of procurement.
- May represent the City Attorney's Office when attending staff, City Council, community, and other meetings.
- May review and draft City policies, ordinances, and city regulations.
- Assists the City Attorney or other attorneys in addressing matters as they may arise, including assisting in negotiation of settlement agreements or voluntary acquisitions of real property interests the City is seeking to acquire through the use of eminent domain.
- Ability to handle projects independently or lead project teams on projects of moderate to extreme level of complexity and organizational risk. Ability to work successfully with project teams with diverse membership.
- Responsible for keeping practice leaders informed and participating with practice leaders to keep City Attorney apprised of project status.
- Ability to develop broad general knowledge of municipal law.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience
Juris doctorate degree (J.D.) or equivalent required. Graduation from an accredited school of law. Experience At least 6 years of increasingly responsible experience and demonstrated success in matters of at least moderate complexity and organizational risk is required.
