What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Director SRIS position at City of Raleigh North Carolina?
Specialized Recreation offers summer camps for youth, teens, and young adults with developmental and/or physical disabilities. This is a part-time, temporary position in which Camp Director will manage all aspects of camp programming, monitoring campers, and supervising staff. The Director may also assume responsibility for duties of a Camp Counselor if needed. The Director will work for either Camp Friendly (Durant Nature Preserve or Carolina Pines) or Camp Exploration (Marsh Creek).
Position and hours:
- Must be available for the month of May, and entire duration of summer camp.
- Camp dates: June 16 – August 15, 2025 (except June 19 & July 4)
- Hours are typically between 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
- Up to 40 hours per week pre-camp (May)
- Up to 50 hours per week June-August
- Mandatory meetings and required trainings will begin mid-May (may be day, evenings, or weekends)
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Enforce City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources policies
- Attend, and ensure staff attend, all scheduled trainings
- Responsible for schedule and time management of staff: camper ratio, ensuring compliance and safety
- Assist in the collection of all staff timesheets
- Properly document and communicate staffing concerns, camper behaviors, and other matters to Full Time Supervisor
- Assist with curriculum development, engaging counselors, and following guidelines and modifications
- Communicate with Full Time Supervisor on supplies needed
- Model standards for conduct for staff and campers
- Report to Full Time Supervisor weekly to review operations, staffing, schedules, and supply needs for the upcoming week
- Drive City of Raleigh vehicles to transport participants during camp hours
Camp Responsibilities:
- Primary liaison between camp and camper’s parent or guardian
- Oversees camp email, voicemail, and paperwork of participants, including behaviors, accidents and incidents
- Provide daily schedules, visual supports, and communications to parents, guardians, and staff
- Assist participants with personal care activities – toileting, dressing, hygiene, feeding, management of belongings, and/or medication
- Responsible for management of check-in/check-out process for all participants
- Transport campers and staff in city vehicles, as needed
- Attend all medical trainings for campers, and assist with medication administration and camper personal care needs during program and trips
- Must have the ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulation and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Manage the documentation of Behavior Action Plans, Incident Plans accidents, and other forms as necessary, capturing statements from witnesses, and notify appropriate staff and personnel
- Modify activities and trips as needed, or provide reasonable modifications for participation as it relates to ozone, weather, and overall general safety of campers
- Support and guide the development of camp counselors
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Special Education, Recreation Therapy, Adapted Physical Education, or related field
- 3 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities
- 2 years of management and supervisory experience
- Possess an excellent work ethic
- Ability to lead a team and work as a member of a team
- Maintain a high standard of maturity and sensitivity
- Professional oral and written communication skills
- High level of motivation, flexibility, creativity, and organization
- Ability to take a strong leadership role, address problems quickly and effectively based on policies and procedures
- Advanced computer skills, including spreadsheets, word processing, databases, email
- Ability to complete all training requirements prior to start of camp including, a background check and controlled substance screening
- Must have a valid NC Driver’s License and good driving record
