What are the responsibilities and job description for the Caretaker - Gipson Play Plaza position at City of Raleigh North Carolina?
The caretaker will work with a fulltime parks staff periodically, must exhibit excellent customer service to the public, be familiar with the facility and city programs, help maintain and clean the facility, recommend maintenance and repair, enforce the rules and guidelines of the facility, and attend all required City trainings.
- Report to work on time. Be ready for work when you report.
- Be sure your personal appearance is in keeping with the accepted standards for Dix Park.
- Receive assignments from supervisors and use appropriate supplies for your tasks.
- Complete the Opening and Closing Daily Checklist for the tasks you are completing.
- Conduct a general walkthrough of park areas and clean certain areas prior to opening to the public.
- When enforcing park guidelines, be tactful, courteous, and consistent.
- Be polite and treat customers with respect and dignity at all times.
- Operate an electric park maintenance cart according to instructions given during your orientation and those given in the manual. Operate an electric or gas powered blower to clean off hard surfaces and sidewalks.
- Keep your all work areas clean during the day, making sure to complete all necessary checklists.
- Respond quickly to unusual situations during normal operation, including power failure, fire alarms, and guest evacuation.
- Maintain a positive attitude at all times.
- Routinely assist in cleaning and stocking park comfort stations, litter control throughout the park, and facility appearance,
Applicants for this position should be well-rounded, organized, self-starters. Must be enthusiastic about working with all populations, display personal maturity, have great communication and customer service skills, and have confidence in dealing with conflict resolution. Ability to speak, write, etc. in English fluently. Bilingual ability is helpful but not required. Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Applicants must be willing to conform to the city of Raleigh’s uniform and grooming policy. Work Shifts fall within varying seasonal hours throughout the year which requires applicant to work flexible hours. Gipson Play Plaza operates Monday to Sunday, including Holidays. Flexibility to work some rentals and special events is necessary. Applicant must be able to remain focused on the job, while dealing with constant interruptions and heavy guest contact. A Caretaker must be able to read and retain information provided in all Park's Operations Manuals and comprehend verbal instructions from lead staff and the crew supervisor. Reliable transportation is required. Applicants must pass a criminal background check, drug, hearing, vision tests and be able to complete all City of Raleigh trainings.
Physical Requirements:
- Able to move equipment, which may include pushing, pulling, and lifting.
- Able to stand for eight (8) hours at a time (be on your feet).
- Able to work in a considerably noisy environment.
- Must have full use of arms and legs to operate equipment and to climb stairs and have bimanual dexterity (full use of both arms and both hands).
- Able to work outside during the warm and cold months.
- Able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must have eyesight of at least 20/30 with or without correction.
- Must be able to hear at least 40 decibels in an environment producing 500 – 4000 hertz.
- Must be able to perform the following movements: Balancing, Stooping, Crouching, Kneeling, Reaching, Standing, Walking, Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, Grasping, and Talking.

Applicants will prove their ability to work in an outdoor setting, provide great customer service skills, and to perform general duties as required. Prior experience working in a recreation facility and/or setting is a plus. Able to complete basic math calculations when filling out daily timecards, inventory and maintenance reports. Applicants must be able to follow written and verbal directions, work independently and as a team, and be able to communicate clearly both verbally and written.Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
