Key duties include mowing, edging, trimming, mulching, weeding, planting, and pruning, as well as operating various machinery such as mowers, tractors, and blowers. The role also involves driving a truck with a trailer, performing preventative maintenance on equipment, and assisting with snow removal. The worker will support the City in cleanup efforts during inclement weather and assist with volunteer events. Work Hours:
This position is expected to work 7:00 am - 3:30 pm in the Fall/Winter/Spring and 6:00 am - 2:30 pm in the Summer. During inclement weather situations and volunteer events, this position may require working extended hours and weekends to accommodate.
- Completes routine maintenance activities such as pruning, mowing, edging, blowing, trimming, mulching, weeding, debris pickup, leaf removal and installing and watering of plants
- Operates machinery, including a Zero-Turn mower, stand on mower, tractor, string trimmer, edger, saw, pruners, & backpack blower
- Drives a truck with trailer on busy city streets and haul materials and equipment under 26,000 pounds (non-CDL)
- Performs preventative equipment maintenance, including replacing worn or damaged parts, sharpening blades, and greasing machinery
- Operates snow removal equipment to maintain sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways
- Assists the City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations, and volunteer events
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- 2 years of turf maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment
- Equipment Operation – operating various park maintenance machinery such as Zero-Turn mowers, tractors, string trimmers, edgers, and backpack blowers
- Preventative Maintenance – performing routine maintenance on equipment, including replacing parts, sharpening blades, and greasing machinery
- Customer Service – strong communication and interpersonal skills to provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image
- Teamwork – collaborating effectively with a team, including maintenance workers, supervisors, and volunteers, to achieve shared goals
- Safety Awareness – committing to safety protocols and attending required safety training to ensure a safe work environment
- Physical Stamina – performing manual tasks such as mowing, trimming, weeding, and lifting, as well as handling outdoor work in various weather conditions
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
