The Cybersecurity Intern for the Information Technology Department for the City of Raleigh will be an integral member of the Information Security Team and will act as a technical assistant while collaborating with cybersecurity professionals in various security duties to increase the security posture and reduce risk for the City. The Intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in a combination of security tools and technologies across various disciplines, including security operations, network security, cloud security, and compliance.
This internship opportunity is a paid position available to work approximately between May through August 2024. Position pay rates are dependent upon education and experience and range from $18 per hour for Undergraduate students and up to $20 per hour for Graduate students.- Support the vulnerability management program, including identification, classification, and mitigation of identified vulnerabilities
- Periodic monitoring of system logs, reports, and data to identify and analyze anomalous or suspicious activity
- Perform information security risk analysis
- Support security policy and procedure analysis and development in compliance with applicable regulations and best practices (e.g., PCI-DSS, HIPAA, CJIS, etc.)
- Conduct research to respond to real-time operational needs
- Collaborate with the cyber security team to analyze and respond to security incidents and breaches promptly and effectively
- Research and evaluate emerging security solutions that align with the City’s needs and goals
- Participate in security awareness and training initiatives
- Assist with cybersecurity help desk ticket assessments and resolutions
- Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field
- Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles, such as: Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA Triad), Common threat vectors (e.g., phishing, malware, social engineering), Access control and authentication
- Familiarity with: Operating systems (especially Linux and Windows), Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls), Scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, or Bash), Security tools (Wireshark, Nmap, Metasploit, etc.)
- Participation in: Cybersecurity competitions (CTFs, Hack the Box, etc.), Student cybersecurity clubs or research, and/or Open-source security projects
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a detail-oriented mindset
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with good written and verbal communication skills
