The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to about 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon areas. Our mission is to provide safe, sustainable water services for our customers while protecting public health and contributing to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of our communities.
Our Water Distribution division is looking for a Maintenance Technician to join our team. Maintenance Technicians are devoted to completing preventive maintenance, utility repairs, utility locating, participating in investigations within our water system and providing excellent customer service. The Maintenance Technician also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City’s distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets (i.e., services, mains, and fire hydrants, and so forth).

Maintenance Technicians work on a repair crew with a rotating after hours call schedule. Pay for being on call (standby) is 8 hours at regular pay. If called back into work, the employee is paid at the overtime rate as indicated by policy. Hours could differentiate based upon flexibility and seasonality, wherein availability to work a varied schedule is required for this position.
- Performs water hydrant preventive maintenance, painting, cut clearance, and repairs
- Assists with annual flushing program, utilizing hand tools to complete tasks.
- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for work within established safety policies, procedures, codes, and regulations
- Uses system software to create work orders, log activities, update maps, update account information, compile and prepare reports, and maintain records, files, and work-related documentation
High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance or utilities experience, or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
- Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
- Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
- Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
- Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
- Moving Company: labor, truck driver
- General Municipal Worker: utility inspector
- Tech School Student: mechanical
- Firefighter: full or part-time
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Performing routine inspections
- Monitoring and maintaining required supplies, materials, and inventory
- Hauling materials, supplies, equipment, and soil
- Operating and driving heavy equipment such as a dump truck, tractor-trailer, tractor, flatbed truck or water truck
- Inspecting assigned equipment for mechanical readiness and performing minor preventative maintenance on equipment
- Setting up worksites and traffic control operations
- Operating assigned tools and equipment
- Providing attention to detail in assignments
- Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications
- Providing customer service
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
