The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking candidates for Crew Supervisor that align with the City’s values, are team-oriented and are leaders with passion and vision for parks and with serving the community.
The ideal candidate should be passionate about public service, highly motivated, and able to manage all aspects of horticultural and park maintenance within their district. They must be able to work with the City Horticulturist to design, layout, and install new landscape beds, as well as renovate existing ones. This position also involves developing an annual horticulture program and submitting required documentation for herbicide applications into the work order database. The candidate may serve as a lead worker, assigning tasks and monitoring their completion, or supervise staff, including conducting performance evaluations, training, and managing hiring, discipline, and termination processes.
The role includes planning, scheduling, and allocating resources for maintenance activities, ensuring safety and quality standards are met, and evaluating completed work. The candidate will maintain reports, records, and other documentation related to their responsibilities. They will also review inventory needs, monitor supply levels, ensure proper storage, and request inventory replenishment. Managing the assigned budget and expenditures is also part of the role.
The candidate will oversee the maintenance of equipment and tools, ensuring they are in safe working condition, troubleshooting issues, and requesting repairs as needed. Other duties include responding to customer inquiries, providing information, or directing them to the right resources. The candidate may also assist with special events or projects and participate in routine grounds maintenance tasks like litter pickup and trash removal. Additionally, the candidate should be able to operate equipment for turf and landscape maintenance. Other duties of a similar nature may be assigned as needed.

- Supervision & Leadership: Lead and supervise a team of gardeners, ensuring effective work assignments, performance evaluations, training, and staff management. Oversee maintenance activities and coordinate volunteer events.
- Landscape Design & Maintenance: Collaborate with the City Horticulturist to design, install, and maintain landscape beds, ensuring high-quality horticultural practices and park maintenance.
- Resource & Budget Management: Plan, prioritize, and allocate resources for park maintenance tasks, manage inventory, and monitor budget and expenditures related to horticultural activities.
- Safety & Equipment Maintenance: Ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment and tools, troubleshoot issues, and initiate repairs as needed while ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Customer Service & Communication: Respond to customer inquiries, provide information, and work with other City staff, contractors, and volunteers to deliver exceptional service and resolve issues effectively.
- Reporting & Documentation: Maintain accurate reports, records, and documentation, including herbicide application details, work orders, and compliance with applicable laws and safety standards.
High School Diploma or GED and six years of related experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing/Certifications
- North Carolina Public Operator Pesticide License.
- Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
- Knowledge of landscape design, installation, renovation and maintenance, disease and pest control, fertilization and other cultural practices required.
- Ability to interpret blueprints and landscape plans.
- Supervisory principles, practices and techniques (based on assignment).
- Project management principles and practices.
- Business math concepts and basic budget administration.
- Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.
- Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.
Skills In:

Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
