The Pullen Arts Center Permanent Part-Time Recreation Programs Specialist position will play a critical role assisting in daily operations and supervising program areas when full-time staff are unavailable. The Recreation Programs Specialist will provide administrative support and assist in oversight of the center’s front desk activities and gallery program. 

The Recreation Programs Specialist is a 30-hour a week permanent part-time position. While this position primarily works daytime shifts, some night and weekend work may be required. Within 2 months of starting, candidate must successfully complete First Aid/CPR training and chemical spill training (training provided). Successful candidates for this role are independent and self-motivated, have a pleasant, flexible attitude as well as excellent customer service, organizational and communication skills. Interest and/or skill in the visual arts and creativity are essential!

The Pullen Arts Center is a dynamic community arts and craft education facility and maker space with studios, galleries, and classrooms. Located near downtown Raleigh and NCSU, Pullen Arts supports visual and craft artists of all ages and levels of experience through classes, workshops, exhibitions, and community events.

The renovated Center features four professionally equipped studios: a bookmaking & printmaking studio, a metals studio, a painting studio, and a pottery studio. These spaces are available for independent use by member artists and for media-specific workshops and classes. The studios are complemented by separate youth, pottery, and multi-purpose classrooms. Youth, Teen, Adult, and Family studio-based classes in bookmaking, drawing, pottery, jewelry, painting, and printmaking are designed and led by professional teaching artists year-round. Pullen has three gallery spaces that exhibit the work of 70 artists annually. The Main Gallery features solo and small group exhibitions for emerging and professional artists, the Youth & Teen Gallery features works by artists 17 years old and younger and the Chalk Wall Mural Space features chalk murals by local student, emerging and professional artists.

The Pullen Arts Center Permanent Part-Time Recreation Programs Specialist will play a critical role assisting in daily operations and supervising program areas when full-time staff are unavailable.

  • Provides administrative support and assist in oversight of the center’s front desk activities and gallery program. 
  • Responsible for Pullen Arts Center’s front desk and gallery spaces, serving as the main point of contact for visitors to the Center.
  • Trains and manages front-desk staff and overseeing communications with participants. 
  • Engages with students, members, volunteers, instructors, studio coordinators, exhibiting artists, and other staff to ensure smooth operations throughout Pullen Arts Center. 
  • Responsible for responding to inquiries about Pullen Arts Center’s programs and spaces, for registering participants for classes and studio memberships, for processing rental bookings for the space.
  • Provides general oversight of what’s happening in the facility during their assigned work hours and ensures front desk staff is informed about Art Center activities. 
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining studio schedules, including open studio hours and the use of space for classes and programs. 
  • Performs peer supervisory tasks to ensure that front desk staff, work study students, and volunteers are completing their assignments. 
  • Provides support in marketing of programs and rental spaces, maintains communication with marketing staff, and monitors website to keep information updated, clear and current.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED and one year of related clerical and/or office support experience. 

OR 

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Awareness of safety issues common in art making environment.
  • Previous experience working in the arts.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have experience utilizing a variety of software programs, including Microsoft Excel and Word, and should expect to carry out a significant portion of the position utilizing Microsoft products, Google products, and RecTrac (training provided upon hire). 

Candidate must be capable of acquiring basic understanding of materials, skills and techniques involved in multiple visual arts mediums; candidate does not need to be an artist but must be able to learn and communicate about artistic skills and studio equipment.
