What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Crossing Guard position at City of Raleigh North Carolina?
This is part-time/seasonal non-sworn work. Work involves directly assisting children crossing the streets and intersections at designated locations near public schools in the morning and afternoon. Tact and courtesy are to be exercised in dealing with the public. Work is reviewed by observation of results achieved and periodic on-site observation.
This is a part-time position while school is in session.
- Use a stop paddle and/or pedestrian signal to stop traffic
- Safely walk from one side of the street to the middle of the road regardless of width
- Comprehension of traffic signs, signals, symbols, and basic traffic rules of the road
- Be observant for unsafe traffic conditions and report them to the School Crossing Guard coordinator
- Serve as a positive role model for students and provide information regarding school crossing safety issues
Experience in dealing with both school age children and adults. This role requires passing a moral and criminal investigation, successfully completing classroom and field training, and access to reliable transportation to and from assigned post. Must be available to work a flexible schedule with rotating hours. Uniforms will be furnished.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Basic motor vehicle traffic and pedestrian laws
- Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public
- Working independently
- Expressing oneself orally, adequately and effectively
ADA and Other Requirements:
This position will require the ability to stand or walk for approximately one hour, to have good vision, and to be physically able to pull a child out of danger. Work involves extreme outdoor conditions while carrying approximately ten pounds of equipment.
