Job Description


Unleash your electrical code knowledge and become a key player in our Building and Safety Division! We’re seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Plans Examiner to ensure compliance with electrical codes, laws, and regulations for commercial projects. This role involves reviewing electrical designs and specifications to verify compliance with national and local codes, ensuring safe and efficient electrical systems for new construction, renovations, and upgrades.

The Planning and Development Department is responsible for planning and visioning for the future growth of Raleigh and permitting and inspections for residential and non-residential development projects. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate commercial plans for code compliance
  • Provide technical expertise, advice, and guidance on code related questions
  • Provide communication and customer support to permit applicants and other stakeholders
  • Collaborate with other trade groups and departments on reviews
  • Maintain records, files, and documentation of code information, resources, and code changes

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in building construction or related field and two years of code enforcement and/or inspection experience

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:


  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • North Carolina Inspection certification as Level III Electrical Code Enforcement Official

Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code
  • Ability to perform electronic plan review
  • Skill in performing technical plans review to determine electrical systems code compliance
  • Ability in interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
