Job Description
Raleigh Police Department is seeking a dedicated Fleet Maintenance Technician. This is manual non-sworn basic skilled to semi-skilled work in servicing, transporting and cleaning police, emergency and automotive related vehicles and equipment. Work consists of routine transportation for servicing of police and emergency automobiles, trucks, and other standard and special equipment operated by the police department. Duties are confined principally to non-technical work such as transporting vehicles, battery and tire replacement, fueling, cleaning, removal of police equipment and other general servicing duties. Assignments are received for the servicing duties which are done independently in accordance with standard methods.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Answers emergency service calls for batteries, tire repairs, and other minor police or automotive repairs
- Performs basic police, automotive and emergency equipment diagnosis and repairs Transports vehicles from various facilities for maintenance, repairs and body shop estimates
- Manage the storage of vehicles at designated facilities and motor-pool locations. Performs oil, lights, tires, fan belts, and fluid level checks in transmissions, radiators, batteries, power steering and window washers Fuel vehicles at city or external fueling stations
- Washes, cleans, and waxes police city vehicles manually or by operating automatic cleaning equipment, maintains automotive service area in a clean and orderly condition
- Maintains and organizes files, shop computer databases and paperwork
- Maintains motor-pool log books to ensure vehicles for operational readiness
- Verify equipment serial numbers

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and one year of experience in repair, servicing, maintenance and cleaning emergency or automotive vehicles, electrical automotive diagnosis and repair, similar manual tasks
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Forklift certification within one year of hire
Additional Information
Knowledge of:
- The basic characteristics and repairs of automotive, police, and emergency equipment
- The basic use of computers, data entry, internet, and email
Ability to:
- Drive safely at all times
- Perform routine basic automotive, police and emergency equipment servicing and repairs as required
- Transport and move vehicles as needed
- Assist mechanics in installation, repair or removal of police equipment
- Assist with or perform repairs on Police and automotive equipment from a mobile service truck
- Complete necessary records and work orders as required by the position
- Prioritize daily trips in an efficient manner, to include transportation for service

Skill in:
- The use of automotive servicing tools and equipment for diagnostics and repairs
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
