This role involves performing various fieldwork task to support the maintenance and improvement of the City’s traffic control devices. This team specializes in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, pavement markings, and the collection of critical traffic data to guide decision-making. By combining technical expertise and a commitment to service, the group plays a vital role in improving mobility and safety across the city’s growing transportation network.
This Count Technician will have the opportunity to make their own schedule. Hours of operation are Monday - Friday 7:45 am -4:15 pm. Hours cannot exceed 1000 in one year.
Duties and Responsibilities
Install and maintain traffic signs following City, State and Federal Standards
Apply thermoplastic pavement markings as part of a crew
Perform routine traffic counts using counters and cameras
The responsibilities of this role are performed mostly in the field and will require the operation of a vehicle
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of related experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Additional Information

Pavement marking installation equipment
Skill in:
Following directions and meeting standards
Providing attention to detail in assignments
Maintaining and updating data and documentation
Utilizing a computer and relevant software, MS Office, ArcGIS Online, Cityworks, traffic count software
ADA and Other Requirements:
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
