Primary Objective of Position

Police Officers maintain order, keeping the peace and responding to citizen's needs by discouraging crimes through high-visibility policing, investigative capability and the subsequent reporting and apprehension of suspected violators of the law. The position reports to the Police Sergeant.

This is an LELS Union position.

The 2025 wage scale is as follows : Step 1 : $37.786 / hour - Step 2 : $38.754 / hour - Step 3 : $43.599 / hour - Step 4 : $46.021 / hour - Top $48.443 / hour

The 2025 longevity wage scale is as follows : After 5 : $49.412 / hour - After 8 : $50.381 / hour - After 12 : $51.350 / hour - After 16 : $52.318 / hour

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or equivalent qualifications meeting the State of Minnesota's requirements to become an Officer
  • Must possess POST license or be POST license eligible
  • Must possess a valid Minnesota driver's license, or when residing in another state, a valid driver's license from that state
  • Must be a citizen of the U.S. or eligible to work in the U.S. under federal requirements
  • Must satisfactorily pass a physical agility test
  • Must satisfactorily pass a criminal history check
  • Must satisfactorily pass a psychological examination
  • Must satisfactorily pass a physical examination and drug screen

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Lateral Transfers

  • One year of experience as a licensed police officer
  • Have completed the probationary period with a U.S. Agency
  • License with the Minnesota POST Board, or eligible to be licensed by the date of hire
  • Current proof of EMR Certification
  • Record of recent Use of Force and Firearms qualifications

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of police procedures and techniques including operation of police vehicles, radios, radar, computers and related equipment
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and of department rules and regulations
  • Skilled in handling and discharging firearms with accuracy and in a safe manner
  • Skilled in driving a motor vehicle, sometimes under adverse conditions and at high speeds
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; this includes speaking, reading, writing and comprehending
  • Ability to independently assess situations and determine appropriate action and to respond quickly and appropriately to crises and emergency situations
  • Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect to citizens' rights
  • Ability to see, hear and remember people, facts and circumstances
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with others to maintain order, including dealing with difficult or violent people
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, prioritize duties, and work independently without direct supervision
  • Ability to read department policy and procedure manuals and written reports
  • Ability to apply laws to specific incidents
  • Ability to maintain police vehicles and equipment, including completing vehicle and equipment maintenance reports
  • Ability to prepare accurate and thorough reports
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, crawl, stand bend, reach, run, subdue or grapple with suspects, crouch, chase, jump, climb and manipulate objects requiring manual dexterity as needed to perform duties
  • Ability to maintain certification as a First Responder or in First Aid
