What are the responsibilities and job description for the College Intern - Communications and Public Affairs position at City of Rancho Cordova?
The Communications Team's goal is to ensure that residents and businesses have access to trusted, accurate and easy-to-understand information. The communications team manages multiple communications channels and develops content for each channel, including the following:
- The city and RCPD websites
- Three digital newsletters: Rancho Cordova News, Rancho Cordova Events and Rancho Cordova Alerts
- Social media: Facebook, X, Instagram, Nextdoor, Threads, YouTube and LinkedIn.
- City publications
In addition, the team responds to media inquiries; coordinates city news announcements; supports city departments and divisions with public education efforts; and manages internal communications.
Strong proficiency in the following areas is essential for success in this role:
- Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Social Media Channels (Facebook, Instagram, X, Nextdoor)
- Additional experience with the following tools is highly desirable but not required: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Constant Contact, Canva, and website content management systems.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Maintain attention to detail and a high level of organization
- Exhibit proficiency in use of modern office methods and equipment
- Interact professionally with residents, businesses and other City staff
- Work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines

Include with your online application a copy of your school schedule that demonstrates that you are currently enrolled in at least 6 or more qualifying units. The documentation must show your name, school name and courses (with credits) you are enrolled in. Enrollment must be for Summer 2025 or Fall 2025 semester/quarter.
Applications will be screened by the Human Resources Department for minimum qualifications. Qualifying applicants may be contacted by the Department to interview. Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check and depending on position applied for a pre-employment medical exam and a drug and alcohol-screening test.
- Perform a variety of fundamental duties in various divisions of the employing department.

Education: Must be currently enrolled in six or more units towards a Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the area of assignment.
Experience: Previous internships for news organizations or Public Relations agencies is desirable.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid CA Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record as determined by the City.
