Water Treatment Plant Superintendent

General Status: position is a FULL-TIME position
Classified Status: non-union.
General Statement of Duties:
The Water Plant Superintendent is responsible for the general overall operation of the Class III Water Treatment Plant and supervision of plant personnel. The Superintendent must develop policies and procedures for the plant and handle all administrative functions. The Superintendent is the OEPA designated responsible person in charge.

1. Supervises plant personnel.
2. Trains plant personnel.
3. Evaluates work performance of plant personnel.
4. Follow safety practices and procedures and assure that subordinates do so as well.
5. Ensures the integrity of plant equipment, structures, grounds, lake and surrounding watershed.
6. Analyze records and prepare reports.
7. Maintains a neat and clean work environment.
8. Assures that plant operates within required standards.
9. Inventories and orders plant chemicals and materials.
10. Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
11. Present ideas and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
12. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
13. Develop and maintain effective and harmonious relationships in the department as a supervisor, with subordinate personnel and co-workers.
14. Interact tactfully and effectively with public officials and the general public.
15. Fill in for water plant operator in the event of an emergency.
16. Regular, reliable, predictable, and punctual attendance is an essential function of the position.
17. Compliance with all City of Ravenna city-wide and departmental policies, work rules and procedures.
18. Performs other related duties as required by Director of Public Service.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:
1. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor degree in Biology or related field preferred.
2. Minimum 5 years’ experience as a supervisor or lead operator in a Surface Water Treatment Plant.
3. Minimum of an Ohio class III water operator’s license.
4. Knowledge of supervisory practices and ability to effectively supervise and manage employees.
5. Knowledge of water treatment plant operations.
6. Knowledge of established plant policies and procedures, water treatment operations, water quality standards and regulatory requirements.
7. Knowledge of electrical system and machinery.
8. Knowledge of the hazards involved in plant operations, of safety practices and procedures, the safety precautions to be taken, and the ability to work safely.
9. Ability to read blueprints.
10. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
11. Ability to present ideas and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
12. Ability to analyze records and prepare reports.
13. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
14. Ability to work alone or with other plant personnel.
15. Ability to develop and maintain an effective and harmonious relationships in the department as a supervisor and with subordinate personnel and co workers.
16. Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with public officials and the general public.
17. Willingness to assume responsibility for work performed and decisions made.
18. Ability to work steadily and quickly.
19. Skill in recording information accurately.
20. Skill in accurately communicating information related to operations of equipment.
21. Skill in basic computer functions and Microsoft office products, able to run a successful computer based maintenance program.
