Lateral K9 Handler Position Opening


The Rawlins Police Department is pleased to announce a lateral opportunity for a qualified and motivated individual to fill the role of police canine officer. The initiative aims to identify individuals outside our department who are interested in patrol K/9 handler and possess the skills necessary to excel in this role. If you are a current sworn officer and interested in seeking a new role, we encourage you to apply. Previous K/9 experience is not required.


Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide canine assistance to the department. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:


  • Assist in the execution of search warrants for controlled substances.
  • Provide support to patrol officers to locate items of evidentiary value.
  • Respond to and assist or handle calls for service when not involved in canine activities.
  • Provide canine assistance to other law enforcement agencies in the area.
  • Successfully complete initial department approved training under the supervision of canine training instructors.
  • Handle and deploy detector trained canines.
  • Attend and participate in maintenance training of assigned canine(s).
  • Attend and participate in annual patrol and detector certification tests for assigned canine(s).
  • Properly care for canine to include proper feeding & grooming of canine(s).
  • Properly care for and maintain canine(s) kennel (both home and vehicle).
  • Properly maintain all issued canine equipment.
  • Conduct demonstrations for police personnel and the public.
  • Analyze problems and formulate solutions utilizing community and problem-oriented policing principles and concepts.
  • Be responsible for performing other related duties and assignments, including those of sworn officers generally.





Qualifications:


  • Minimum Education Level and Type: High Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum Experience Qualifications: Currently or recently employed as a sworn peace officer with the ability to become certified by Wyoming POST.
  • Good performance record and proven ability to handle patrol responsibilities.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable federal, state and municipal laws, City and department procedures and department written directives, rules and regulations, and the Canine Unit Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Must have personal integrity, pay attention to detail and be physiologically and psychologically able to perform essential functions of a Police Officer.
  • Ability to understand, demonstrate and implement problem solving techniques based on the concepts of community and problem-oriented policing.
  • Ability to define and analyze problems quickly, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and take appropriate action under stress.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use self-defense, effectively use standard police weapons, and skill to operate police cruiser under emergency conditions.
  • Knowledge of laws of arrest and search and seizure.
  • Ability to care for a canine.
  • Ability to properly handle a trained police canine.
  • Ability to conduct investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate and direct resources at a crime scene.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle public contacts in a tactful and sensitive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports on routine, as well as complicated investigations, and document the investigation clearly and factually.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare all reports, correspondence, and other documents using appropriate language, grammar and spelling.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision, to act independently and to make sound decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to display excellence and initiative in work performance.

The Rawlins Police Department offers various instructor roles and specialties, including K-9 Officers, Firearms Instructors, Custody and Control Instructors, Bike Patrol, Drug Recognition Experts, Investigations, and School Resource Officers. We offer plenty of opportunities for personal growth and professional development.

Pay and Benefits:

Hiring Bonus: $2000 for new officers without prior experience and $3000 for Lateral Officers.

Competitive Pay:

We offer increased rank pay and paid overtime. Officers are eligible to receive predetermined hourly increases for certifications and educational degrees.

Paid Insurance Premiums: The City of Rawlins pays all employee insurance premiums, a savings of $320 a month, and $3840 a year for a family.

Pension: You are eligible for a 20-year retirement at 50% of your top five earning years, 62.5% at 25 years, and 75% after 30 years.

No State Income Tax: Citizens of Wyoming do not pay personal or corporate state income taxes, have no retirement income taxes, and enjoy low property and sales tax rates.

Take-Home Cars: The Rawlins Police Department has a take-home car program where each officer is assigned a take-home patrol car. Take-home cars add to the visibility of protection in the neighborhoods where the officer lives.

Paid Academy: All new officers will attend the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy. The Rawlins Police Department pays for the academy tuition and the officer's salary. Experienced officers are encouraged to apply and may be eligible for peace officer certification reciprocity.

Applicants are advised that upon hiring, they must complete the department's Field Training Program, and out-of-state applicants must successfully challenge the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirements to meet the criteria for Wyoming's Certification Reciprocity.
