What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Officer position at City of Reading Police Department?
The City of Reading Ohio Civil Service Commission is testing to create an eligibility list for a Full-time position of PATROL OFFICER with the City of Reading Police Department.
A written exam will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15th, 2025, on the 2nd floor of the City of Reading Municipal building located at 1000 Market St., Reading Ohio 45215. A valid driver’s license must be presented on the day of testing to sit for the examination.
Applications are available at www.readingohio.org. or at the City of Reading General Offices, located on the second floor of the City of Reading Municipal building, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Applications MUST be returned and filed with the city clerk or emailed to bedens@readingpolice.org, before 4:00 p.m. on , March 12th, 2025.
Additional credit to a passing score will be also given as follows:
Four-year degree 10%
Two-year degree 5%
OPOTA Certified 10%
Military Credit 20%
Two years prior police experience
(Full time or part time) 10%
Total maximum credit to be awarded is 20%
To receive the credit for military experience, a copy of the applicant’s DD-214 form confirming an honorable discharge must be submitted at the time of your application. To receive educational credit a copy of the applicant’s diploma must be submitted at the time of your application. To receive prior police experience credit, a copy of the applicant’s OPOTA certificate must be submitted at the time of your application.
All applicants upon completion of the hiring process, must possess a current state certification from the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission, be 21 years of age or older, possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and be insurable.
Prior to appointment, candidates must be able to pass a background investigation, interview process, polygraph examination, psychological examination and a pension mandated physical examination.
Starting salary for the position is $62,663.88- $83,858.40 annually. Starting pay depending on qualifications. Step credit given for years of service.
An excellent benefits package is provided with health insurance where 90% of the yearly deductible paid by the city. Dental and vision insurance where 85% of premium is paid by the city. A $25,000 life insurance policy is also included in the benefit package. Employees receive paid vacation days, (112 hours for years 1-8, 168 hours for years 9-15, 224 hours years 16-24, 272 hours for 25 years), accrual of sick time of 112 hours a year, 2 personal days, 9.5 paid holidays paid at 3x hourly rate, yearly uniform allowance, bi-annual weapons and longevity check, and many other benefits. Officers currently work 12 hour shifts with every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off.
