Specialty assignments or positions include: ERT (swat), part-time assistant trainer and a full-time trainer, peer support, field training officer, predatory offender tracking officer, bike patrol, violent crime/drug task force, investigator, emergency management, school resource officer, and K9.
Lateral candidates may start at an advanced wage step based on years of experience, current rate of pay, education, certifications, and other relevant factors. Pre-hire vacation hours negotiable. Patrol Officers serve and protect the safety of the community by enforcing state and local statutes, investigating crimes, apprehending criminals, resolving conflicts, and providing emergency services or assistance to those in need.
If extended a conditional offer of employment, candidate must pass a comprehensive background check, psychological exam, WorkSTEPS physical agility test and medical exams.
Minimum Education Requirements: Associate degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field as mandated by POST (or eligible for licensure by POST).
Certification/Licenses: Licensed as a peace officer in the State of Minnesota by time of hire. Must possess a valid driver's license. CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or the ability to acquire such within six months of hire.

- Patrol the business and residential areas of the City of Red Wing on foot, bike or in vehicle, looking for signs of criminal activity to enforce laws and ensure safety and security.
- Respond to accidents, medical emergencies, fire scenes and other emergencies as required; administer first aid until more qualified personnel arrive on the scene; direct traffic flow and contact tow trucks to clear away damaged vehicles.
- Enforces traffic laws, operate radar, and write violations.
- Administers and/or monitors drug and alcohol tests.
- Periodically check the security of business establishments and vacant residences.
- Resolve and mediate disputes in citizens' homes, places of business, or other public gathering places.
- Investigate accidents and responds to public assists.
- Investigates crimes
- Testify in court as arresting officer in criminal and civil matters whenever needed.
- Transport and deliver paperwork to courts, City Hall, City Council members, attorney offices, and other places as necessary.
- Provide backup to other officers or agencies when needed.
- Participate in community policing and crime prevention efforts as directed.
- Attend required training classes and complete qualifications necessary to maintain POST license.
- May act as Field Training Officer to supervise and document the activities of probationary officers during training; may answer new officer questions, evaluate performance, and ensure adequate training.
- Perform community service tasks including notifying next-of-kin of deaths, contacting utility companies for downed lines, assisting the local school patrol, participating in local bike safety and pedestrian safety programs, participating and assisting with school programming, assisting stranded motorists, assisting the elderly, animal control services, and assisting in money transfers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- May be required to wear protective body armor, as required by departmental policy, which may cause discomfort in seasonal weather conditions.
- While on patrol or at crime scenes, may have exposure to injury, trauma, angry or violent individuals, animal bites, blood-borne and air-borne diseases, biohazards, traffic accidents, visual and emotional trauma, and adverse road and weather conditions.
- Lift up to 100 pounds.
