Electric Utility Assistant System Operator – Transmission and Distribution
- Assist in the preparation, checking, and administering the execution of safe and reliable switching procedures, both for City personnel and in coordination with other interconnected utilities.
- Assist with maintaining and updating a set of maps which indicate the current electric system status.
- Assist in monitoring and maintaining equipment loading levels to prevent damage during switching and various loading periods.
- Assist in preparing necessary reports and notices to advise City personnel of system events. Prepare the necessary reports as required to meet City and regulatory agency requirements.
- Assist in responding to customer problems in a courteous, efficient, and professional manner.
- Assist in contacting other City departments, as required, to advise them of outages pertaining to their equipment.
- Assist in informing relevant parties of system outage status in a timely fashion and provide periodic updates for the duration of the outage. During SOP-200 emergency situations, provide REU PIO with system outage status as requested.
Electric Utility System Operator – Transmission and Distribution (NERC Certification Rate)
- Contact other City Departments as required to advise them of outages pertaining to their equipment. Perform Outage Notification in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
- Inform relevant parties of system outage status in a timely fashion and provide periodic updates for the duration of the outage. During SOP-200 emergency situations, provide REU PIO with system outage status as requested.
- Make rapid decisions on the best and safest method of handling emergency situations, outages, and curtailments; and take corrective action when required.
- Provide operational information to engineers and support staff to develop and improve software and automation processes, provide information in the development of operational procedures for transmission and distribution system operation, assist with training new hires in the Assistant System Operator and System Operator positions.
- Obtain and maintain applicable trainings and/or certifications as required. Gain knowledge and training relevant to the duties of this position.
- Ensure all applicable NERC and WECC reliability standards for the Transmission and Distribution System Operator desk are in full compliance, report non-compliance events under required timeframes as applicable by reliability standard definitions. Maintain applicable reliability certifications as required.
- Knowledge of Electric Utility operating practices
- Knowledge of Electric Utility equipment limitations
- Knowledge of system protection equipment as these apply to the Electric Utility
- Knowledge of NERC requirements associated with Transmission System Operator duties
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees
- Ability to demonstrate strong internal and external communication skills
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with the public and fellow utility personnel
- Ability to operate a personal computer and SCADA system
Electric Utility Assistant System Operator – Transmission and Distribution
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
- Typical education would include two years of relevant coursework from an accredited college or university.
- Two years of relevant extensive experience in an electric utility operation or engineering department. Two additional years of relevant experience may be substituted for the two years of college coursework.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
Electric Utility System Operator – Transmission and Distribution (NERC Certification Rate)
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
- Typical education would include the completion of industry acknowledged coursework in system operations (WECC System Operator classes or equivalent), or an applicable apprenticeship or two years college coursework from an accredited college or university.
- Typical experience would include three years relevant experience with an Electric Utility. Two additional years (two years) of extensive experience in an Electric Operations Center as a Transmission and Distribution System Operator or Dispatcher may be used to substitute for the two years of college coursework.
- Possession of a current NERC Certificate in at least one of the following areas: Reliability Operator, Balancing, Interchange and Transmission Operator, or Transmission Operator.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
