The Assistant Planner plays a key role in supporting the City of Redmond’s development services by providing exceptional customer service and technical expertise on zoning codes and application processes. This position is responsible for reviewing a variety of permits and land use applications, conducting field inspections, and supporting planning efforts through research, analysis, and interdepartmental coordination. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and committed to continuous improvement in planning operations and service delivery.

  • Provide customer service daily by providing both internal and external customers information on the Redmond Zoning Code and application process. This includes shift(s) at the customer service desk
  • Conducts field inspections
  • Reviews and processes lines of business such as single-family building permits, business licenses, tree permits, shoreline permits, tenant improvement permits, minor land use applications, and other tasks as assigned
  • Integral contributor to process streamlining and application form updating
  • Assists in initial development plan reviews including short plats, accessory dwelling units, telecommunication facility permits, minor modifications, components of larger projects, environmental impact for conformance with applicable codes, plans and regulations
  • Assists in conducting planning research, studies and analysis related to urban planning, environment, transportation, and land use policy, program or regulation change and update; prepares statistical reports, projecting trends, and monitoring changes; collects, compiles and analyzes data and information
  • Facilitates and coordinates with internal departments and external agencies to resolve issues that arise

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The following knowledge and skills are typical of the Assistant planner classification though will vary based on specific assignments:

  • Entry level knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal land use, planning, architectural design and site planning; research, data collection and data analysis
  • Methods and procedures of review related to programs/projects assigned
  • Use of software applications like word processor, spreadsheets, databases and GIS applications

Ability to

  • Be highly productive with multiple-competing deadlines
  • Maintain professionalism during stressful situations
  • Work independently as well as be able to collaborate effectively with teammates and customers alike
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes, determining compliance with such regulations
  • Create graphs, plans or maps
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers
  • Maintain records for the department

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning, urban design and development, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, environmental science, natural resources management, transportation planning, public policy, or related discipline
  • Equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Licenses and Certificates

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License and a driving record that meets city standards

Selection Process

  • All applicants will be notified of their application status.

  • Note, the City may review existing application pools to fill this position or use this pool to fill future vacancies.
  • Offers of employment are conditional based on the candidate successfully passing both background and reference checks. Internal candidates are subject to passing a new background if the previous check was conducted more than six months ago.
  • Additionally, new hires relocating to the area are required to have Washington State residency within 30 days of their start date to comply payroll tax purposes.
