These employees provide fire and life safety services to the City of Redmond, and King County Fire District 34. They also provide ALS services to the cities of Duvall, Kirkland, Woodinville, and the unincorporated communities of Northeast King County. This represents a service area of 266 square miles and a population of over 333,000 citizens.

- Administers Advanced Life Support (ALS)
- Responds to various service calls providing assistance to citizens in situations that are not life threatening
- Drives emergency response vehicles as qualified and appropriate for the incident
- Transports patients to hospital or other medical facility
- Completes detailed reports for use by hospital personnel as an aid in patient assessment and treatment
- Maintain continuing education requirements for recertification
- Participates in planning related to quality assurance, research, and EMS education
- Provide continuing education and quality assurance for BLS providers throughout Northeast King County
- Perform daily, weekly and monthly checks and routine maintenance for all facilities, apparatus, and equipment
Knowledge of:
- State and local rules and regulations regarding the provision of life support, diagnosis, and medical treatment in emergency situations
- Emergency medical treatment regulations describing the medical treatment permitted with/without a physician’s orders
- Record-keeping requirements
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
- Safe procedures used to lift and carry people and equipment

Demonstrated ability to:
- Conduct strenuous tasks under emergency fire, medical, and other hazardous situations and meet the minimum standards of agility and endurance
- Operate a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) as a condition of employment per the Respiratory Protection Standard 292=6-62 WAC Part E
- Learn pertinent state and local laws and department policies, procedures, and operational guidelines
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and the public
- Follow oral and written directions
- Maintain current knowledge in emergency medical technician practices and procedures
- Diagnose medical problems quickly and determine appropriate treatment
- Operate basic life support equipment and other medical equipment contained in an Emergency response vehicle
- Respond quickly and safely to fire and/or emergency medical calls and provide skilled medical care or specialized fire fighting functions
- Perform emergency scene work to a firefighter level including EMS related incidents
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/GED equivalent
- Successful completion of the Michael K. Copass Harborview Paramedic Training program at the University of Washington
- Certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Certification Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Licenses and Other Requirements:
- Ability to obtain University of Washington/King County paramedic certification within 60 days of appointment
- Certification as Firefighter 1 within two years of employment
- Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Ability to obtain a valid Washington state driver’s license by the time of appointment, with evidence of a good driving record according to insurance guidelines
- United States citizen who can read and write the English language
- Must meet medical and physical agility standards and all civil service requirements.
- Must fulfill bargaining unit membership requirements within 30 days of hire

- Fire Fighter Paramedics who are hired are granted longevity based on their paramedic certification date from Michael K. Copass Harborview Paramedic Training Program at the University of Washington for purposes of establishing accrual rates and compensation only.
- This position is part of the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems Law Enforcement Officers' and Fire Fighters' (LEOFF) pension plan.
