The Utility Engineering Division of the Public Works Department is seeking an energetic and innovative engineer who shares our commitment to environmental stewardship to join our team as a Surface and Storm Water Engineer. The successful candidate will help implement our regional facilities and watershed management plans, focusing on stormwater management, stream restoration, and groundwater protection. Additionally, this role involves managing capital and operational projects related to streams, habitats, and stormwater. Collaborating with staff, you will support our vibrant urban community while contributing to a lasting natural legacy.
This position is hybrid/on-site
- Managing stormwater and/or stream and habitat restoration projects; from inception to final design, including selecting and managing consultant teams and contractors.
- Field work including investigation and resolution of resident inquiries and complaints, stream reconnaissance, condition assessment, and code enforcement support as well as in-field consultation during project construction.
- Assisting the engineering supervisor with strategic water resources infrastructure planning and policy review and development.
- Performs engineering calculations to troubleshoot stormwater system issues
- Collaborating with other functional areas in planning and project development to maximize stream and habitat function and value while balancing other city needs and interests.
- Securing environmental permits and grants from relevant agencies, and maintaining productive working relationships with local Tribes and resource agencies
- Supporting development review and operations staff with surface/storm water policy and in-field expertise.
- Review of capital and private development projects for compliance with stormwater management and critical area regulations.
- Salmonid and stream ecology and restoration practices, particularly in an urban context.
- Laws, codes, policies, and permitting requirements for stormwater and natural resource projects, including endangered species.
- Hydrologic and hydraulic modelling including Western Washington Hydrologic (Model WWHM), Strom Water Management Model (SWMM), MGS Flood, and HEC-RAS a plus.
- Stormwater management techniques, including Low Impact Development Best Management Practices
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Four (4) years engineering experience.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A Master's may substitute for two (2) years of experience
- Professional Engineering Registration is preferred
Licenses and Certificates
- Engineer-In-Training Certification.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License and a driving record that meets city standards.
