The City of Redmond is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Traffic Signal Technician to join the Traffic Operations Safety and Engineering division. In this role, you will play a vital part in maintaining and improving the city’s infrastructure by ensuring the reliable operation of traffic control devices, streetlighting systems, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). 


This is a great opportunity for candidates with experience in traffic signal systems, electrical work, and proactive problem-solving who are passionate about public service.


This is an onsite position.

This position is full-time and might require some weekends and evenings.

Schedule Details: 4-10 schedule M-F, 6am-4:30PM

  • Install, test, and maintain traffic control devices and streetlight equipment: Perform installation, calibration, and maintenance of traffic signals, controllers, and street lighting systems to ensure they operate safely and effectively.
  • Support implementation and maintenance of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS): Assist with integrating and maintaining advanced ITS technologies, including traffic controllers, detection systems, video monitoring, and communication networks to optimize traffic flow.
  • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, inspectors, and designers: Partner with project stakeholders to ensure work aligns with city standards, safety regulations, and project designs.
  • Monitor locate tickets and perform utility locates: Manage and execute utility locate tasks to identify and protect underground infrastructure during excavation or construction activities.
  • Respond to emergency callouts for repairs: Act as a first responder for traffic signal and street light malfunctions, knockdowns, equipment failures, and other emergencies, troubleshooting and implementing repairs to restore safe traffic operations.
  • Document procedures, maintain records, and prepare reports: Maintain detailed and accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and completed repairs using city asset management software, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Maintain and update safety procedures: Review and implement safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment for field personnel and compliance with all applicable safety standards.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Principles, theories and practices in the Electrical and/or electronics field as applied to installation and repair of signal circuits and systems
  • Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • National Electrical Manufacturer Association (NEMA) codes and standards
  • Industrial practice and standards in data communication maintenance
  • Techniques for troubleshooting and repairing of data communication equipment and cables
  • Safe working procedures
  • Effectively manage workload and responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Facilitating cooperation, trust and integrity with all customers and staff
  • Perform troubleshooting and repair work on malfunctioning traffic equipment both in the field and on bench
  • Troubleshoot and repair problems with faulty traffic signal and communication systems
  • Install, diagnose, repair and remove electronic and electrical devices and components  related to traffic signal equipment
  • Install and test fiber optic cable
  • Operate and perform work in a bucket/lift truck
  • Exercise sound judgment and effectively problem solve
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and be an effective team player
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative, effort and commitment


Physical Demands

Work is performed both in the field, including driving and operating a bucket/lift truck and boom truck. Employee risks physical hazard from exposure to electrical wiring, operating heavy equipment, working from heights, and working in heavy traffic. Lifting equipment in excess of 50 pounds is required. This position is subject to 24-hour call back for emergency repairs for periods of up to two weeks in duration. Members of this classification are subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Highway Administration.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Two (2) years experience in maintenance and repair of traffic signal/lighting and/or electrical/electronic systems
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License and a driving record that meets city standards. Remain insurable by the City.
  • International Municipal Signals Association (IMSA) Level I Signal Technician certification required within one year of hire.
  • CDL within one year of date of hire
  • IMSA Level II within two years of hire

Offers of employment are conditional based on the candidate successfully passing both background and reference checks. Internal candidates are subject to passing a new background if the previous check was conducted more than six months ago.


Additionally, new hires relocating to the area are required to have Washington State residency within 30 days of their start date to comply payroll tax purposes.
