POSITION DEFINITION:
Under general direction of the Chief Building Official, this position is accountable as a team member of the Community Development Department to achieve results in support of the City's mission, goals, policies and objectives.

- Performs technician level duties including but not limited to: Inspecting industrial, commercial and residential buildings during various states of construction and remodeling to assure compliance with applicable local, state and federal regulations.
- Supervises and trains personnel.
- Implements directions from superiors that are provided orally and/or in writing.
- Reports orally and in writing to superiors regarding safety and health concerns encountered while performing required duties.
- Operates motor vehicle while performing required duties.
- Issues permits for work the be performed.
- Confer with architects, contractors, builders and responds to inquiries over the telephone or in person.
- Performs journey- level inspection duties in trade areas.
- Inspects foundations, cement, framing, plastering, plumbing, heating, and electrical installations.
- Assures compliance with State Building and Fire Codes.
- Participates in checking building plans, reviews plans and specifications.
- Examines grades.
- Inspects Mobile home parks.
- Inspects new business occupancies in conjunction with issuance of business licenses.
- Participates in the preparation of non- complying cases for prosecution and testifies in court.
- Supervises office operations and personnel liaison to other departments.
- Receives and solves citizen complaints.
- Delivers outstanding internal and external customer service while solving problems and proactively creating sustainable solutions to issues.
- Conducts duties, responsibilities, tasks and assignments with a constructive, cooperative, positive, professional attitude and demeanor.
- Supports the City's mission, goals, policies and objectives.

CLASSIFICATION:
The position is covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is a member of the Classified Service.Knowledge of equipment, regulations, principles, procedures and/or practices necessary to perform required duties; Vehicle Code of the State of California; applicable health and safety regulations; correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
The position requires computer literacy with knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office; the ability to communicate using email programs; and an understanding of and adherence to City policies for information technology.

The position requires meeting the physical employment standards for the classification.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Two years of full- time paid experience performing duties comparable to those of a Building Inspector with the City of Redondo Beach, or other comparable experience in another class.
- A Commercial Building Inspector Certificate issued by the International Code Council.
- Possession of a valid Class " C" California Driver' s License is a condition of employment to this classification.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process may include but is not limited to: Application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview. All employment offers made by the City are contingent upon establishing proof of a prospective candidate's legal authorization to work in the United States and successfully passing all components of the pre-employment process, such as: reference check, background investigation, fingerprint criminal history check, post-offer drug test, post-offer psychological and post-offer medical examination, the cost of which will be borne by the City.
