ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of Engineering Technician I/II (Permit Technician Services). Engineering Technicians typically perform technical duties in one or more three service areas: Drafting, Design and Support Services; Construction Inspections Services; and/or Permit Technician Services. The current opening will focus primarily on Permit Technician Services for receiving and issuing encroachment permits, in the Engineering and Transportation Department.
Candidates may be selected at either the Engineering Technician I or II level, based on their demonstrated knowledge, skills and ability. The Engineering Technician I position is the entry level position of the classification series. Incumbents at this level will be reasonably expected to progress to the Engineering Technician II level with experience and satisfactory job performance. Engineering Technician II is the intermediate level position of the classification series. Incumbents at this level will be given assignments with a higher degree of complexity and will progressively be expected to perform their work with greater independence.

Typical Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Assist the public at the front counter by issuing permit applications, answering inquiries, and providing information on the application process, required permits, and municipal code compliance.
- Respond to phone calls and direct inquiries to the appropriate City personnel.
- Provide excellent customer service to all individuals by being attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous, respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
- Address general encroachment inquiries, including parcel maps, improvement plans, encroachment permits, as-builts, and street improvements.
- Receive and review land development and right-of-way encroachment permit applications, ensuring completeness and compliance with regulations.
- Assess project scope and relevant
- permit requirements, advising applicants on necessary corrections.
- Verify contractor licensing, insurance, and regulatory compliance before permit issuance.
- Issue encroachment permits and process associated fees.
- Track plan check applications and route plans to appropriate staff for review.
- Log and manage permit information in the permit system (ComDev), set up files, and monitor plan status.
- Notify applicants, contractors, owners, developers, and engineers of plan status and required actions.
- Ensure all necessary approvals are obtained before issuing permits.
- Maintain engineering studies, inspections, surveys, and maps.
- Coordinate as-built information with the City’s internal Geographic Information System (GIS) team.
- Research City archives and retrieve plans, reports, maps and other public records for the Engineering Department, other departments, and public inquiry.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
