Notice: A lifeguard certification course will be available through Topguard Training at Reedley High School from April 26, 2025 through April 27, 2025. The Lifeguards who are hired by the City of Reedley and remain the entire season will be reimbursed $150 toward the cost of their certification. DEFINITION 

Under the supervision of the Community Services Department, the Aquatics Lifeguard series will provide for the safety and enjoyment of all pool patrons; teach various levels of swimming skills.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

  • Aquatics Lifeguard – This is an entry level position in the Aquatics Program.

  • Aquatics Lead GuardThis is a lead position supporting the Aquatics Senior Guard and Aquatics Manager.

  • Aquatics Senior Guard– This position will act as Aquatics Manager in their absence.


SUPERVISION

Aquatics Lifeguard

Exercises no supervision.

Aquatics Lead Guard

May exercise supervision over lifeguards in the absence of the Aquatics Senior Guard and Aquatics Manager while teaching techniques and strategies.

Aquatics Senior Guard

May exercise supervision over lifeguards in the absence of the Aquatics Manager and while teaching techniques and strategies.


EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

  • Help patrons be aware of pool rules. 

  • Prevention of accidents through the enforcement of aquatics policies and rules. 

  • Administer artificial respiration, CPR, and first aid, as needed. 

  • Keep assigned area clean and free of any and all safety hazards at all times. 

  • Maintain attentiveness. 

  • Teach various levels of progressive swim lessons. 

  • Set up and put away all items related to swim lessons and public swim events. 

  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Aquatics Lifeguard

Knowledge of:

The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

  • Assist swimmers improve and advance in their swimming skill.

Education and Training Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • A minimum of one year of experience with children between the ages of 0-18 is desirable.

  • A minimum of one year of Lifeguard experience or swim team experience is desirable.    

Training:

  • Pass Department physical agility and written test as required.  

License or Certificate:

  • Lifeguard Certificate which includes CPR, AED and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer.


Aquatics Lead Guard

In addition to the qualifications for an Aquatics Lifeguard:

Knowledge of:

  • Facility maintenance and expectations for City of Reedley’s responsibility at the Pool Complex.

  • Collecting money from the public.

  • Lead training exercises and support Lifeguard with required skills through leading by example.

  • All lifeguard required skills.

Skills to:

  • Be proficient in all swim class skills. 

Ability to:

  • Maintain strict confidentiality in performing Aquatics Program duties.

  • Coach new lifeguard staff and teach swim lesson techniques.

Education and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • Have a minimum of one-year Lifeguard experience or swim team experience. 


Aquatics Senior Guard

In addition to the qualifications for an Aquatics Lifeguard and Lead Guard:

Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures for staff disciplinary action.

  • All lifeguard required skills.

Skill to:

  • Be proficient in all lifeguard required skills.

  • Lead safety trainings for City Aquatics staff.

Ability to:

  • Maintain strict confidentiality in performing Aquatics Program duties.

  • Organize students and move them to the appropriate swim class based on the students’ skill level. 

  • Communicate these changes effectively with the student’s guardian.

Education and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • Have a minimum of two-three years of Lifeguard experience or swim team experience.    


Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be lifting and carrying children and equipment, and will spend long periods of time in a pool and in the outside environment.  The temperatures are warm to hot conditionals a majority of the time.  The employee will be expected to clean and maintain the equipment and the facility, and will be expected to perform general cleanup duties.   The employee will work closely with the public and are expected to respond, as trained in the Lifeguard Certification Course, to any emergency that arises.

  • The employee will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at the same time. The employee is required to supervise all of the patrons in the designated zone and the overall pool facility at all times, ensure that the patrons are involved in safe and appropriate activities, and be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.
