This position is in the Public Works Department, Sewer Division and will work under the supervision of the Chief Plant Operator. This position is in the General Services Bargaining Unit (GSU) and subject to the terms and conditions of employment as specified in the GSU Memorandum of Understanding and the City's Personnel Policies & Procedures Manual. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Wastewater Operator Trainee (For Grade 1 Operator Certification) - Wastewater Operator Trainee is an entry level position for candidates qualified to learn the duties of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, as defined by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). The incumbent may not work as a "lone operator" as defined by the SWRCB in Title 23, Division 3, Chapter 26, Article 1, Section 3671 and approved pursuant to Article 3. Section 3681.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I - This is an entry level position in the wastewater treatment plant series. This position requires prior sewage plant experience and applicable certification as defined by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). Incumbents work under general direction and are expected to perform a full range of duties and meet the qualification standards for the class. Employees in this class may be promoted to Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II upon obtaining a Grade II Certificate.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II - Positions in this class are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I, or when filled from the outside, require prior sewage plant operation experience and applicable certification as defined by the California SWRCB. Appointment to the higher class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class. A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II works under general supervision and is expected to perform the entire range of plant operation work. Work in this class is distinguished from that of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I class by the greater complexity of the work, by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate, and the required possession of, or ability to obtain, a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the State of California Water Resources Control Board.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III - The Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator position is normally filled by the advancement from the lower class of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II position, or when filled from the outside, requires prior wastewater treatment plant operation experience and applicable certification as defined by the California SWRCB. - Operates wastewater treatment facilities to control flow of wastewater, sludge, and effluent.
- Operates, monitors, maintains, lubricates, inspects, and repairs a wide variety of equipment, including: motors, pumps, centrifuges, valves, gates, vehicles (including, but not limited to, front end loader, dump truck, tractor and attachments, forklift, and pick-up trucks), screening equipment, gear boxes, belt drives, and various other pieces of equipment.
- Starts up and shuts down high speed centrifuges, pumps, motors, treatment process equipment, and other related equipment in the course of routine operations, maintenance, and during emergencies.
- Utilizes a local area computer network and distributed control system in the routine operating and monitoring of the treatment facility and the collection and maintenance of plant operational data.
- Notifies appropriate staff of electrical and instrumentation malfunctions.
- Reads and interprets meters, dials, gauges, and other data recording instruments for operational control and record keeping.

- Ability to obtain a Wastewater Operator-In-Training Grade I Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to obtain, at a minimum, a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the CSWRCB within one year or maximum three years from time of hire as a Wastewater Treatment Operator Trainee at which time the trainee becomes eligible to progress to a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I. - The Wastewater Treatment Plant is classified as a Grade III Plant; therefore, the ability to obtain, at a minimum, a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate is required. The established time to obtain the certificate shall be dictated by the requirements set forth by the CSWRCB and the City.

- Safety regulations prohibit incumbents from wearing contact lenses when working with certain chemicals, or from wearing beards or other facial hair that prevents a proper respirator fit as required, depending on work assignment. Must pass annual respirator physical and fit testing depending on work assignment.
