This recruitment will only be used to fill Streets Division vacancies.

The ideal candidate in this position will lead, oversee, and participate in the work of lower level maintenance staff responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair work on various City facilities and structures such as streets, signs, fountains, planters, trash cans, and related public works structures. They will participate in snow and ice removal activities. Also, they will operate a variety of public works maintenance tools and equipment.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Lead, plan, train, review, and participate in the work of lower level maintenance staff responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair work on various City structures such as streets, signs, trash cans, and related public works structures.
  • Train assigned employees in their areas of work including maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Supervise the use, care and operation of appropriate hand and power tools and equipment including saws, hammers, shovels, light trucks, and related equipment.
  • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and hand and power tools in the performance of assigned functions; haul and dump debris, cut branches and shrubs, and pick up litter.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance duties in the overlay of street surfaces; rake and spread asphalt; seal cracks and patch streets; perform pot hole patching and surface repairs using jack hammers and other equipment to fill and compact repaired areas.
  • Perform street cuts for excavation and replacement of new asphalt; remove and replace concrete and asphalt; construct forms, lay cement and finish cement on curbs, gutters and sidewalks; perform cement repairs and patch work.
  • Operate snow plows, sanders, and related snow removal equipment as required in the removal of snow and ice.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Fabricate, prepare, paint, or silk screen street markings and signs; engrave plastic signs; replace and repair street signs as necessary.
  • Perform a variety of tasks in the painting of traffic markings and signs; paint crosswalks, stop bars, stop signs, directional arrows, lane markers, parking spaces, meter posts, barricades and traffic islands.
  • Locate and mark City owned sewer/storm infrastructure.
  • Monitor and repair electronic sprinkler systems and associated control devices.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies; obtain price quotes and purchase tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Estimate time and materials needed for jobs assigned; requisition tools and supplies as required.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints or refer to higher level staff.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.

Education:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:
  • Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers and storm drains, or related public works facilities and structures including two (2) years at a level comparable to a Maintenance Worker I.

License or Certificate:
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, flagger certification.

Examination Process:

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of an in-person Written Examination along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:

  • Written Examination = 70%

  • Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 30%

Written Examination:
Written Examination – April 9, 2025 – Testing times will be dependent on the number of candidates. A scheduling email will be sent out after the posting has closed.

Weight = 70% of final grade

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked "QUESTIONS" on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.

  • Responses to your T&E questions should be consistent with the information given in your application details. Answers are subject to verification.
  • Failure to complete all of the questions or incomplete responses will result in a lower score; therefore, it is advantageous for you to provide a full and complete response to each supplemental question.
  • In order to receive credit for education or training, you must attach copies of your transcripts, diploma, or relevant certificates to your online application.
  • Resumes or questionnaires uploaded as attachments to the application will not be accepted in lieu of completing each question online.
  • "See Resume" or "See above," etc., are not qualifying responses and will not be considered.
  • Changes or corrections to your responses cannot be made once your application packet has been submitted.
  • TIP: It may be more efficient to develop your responses in a word processing document and then paste them into the online questionnaire to be submitted.


Notification:

Applicants are notified by email of their examination results. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications will also be notified within two weeks of the job posting closing.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:

On promotional examinations (Rule VIII, Section 9), in the event of tie scores resulting from final rating, including seniority points, a classified employee will be awarded veteran's preference and provided a rank preference if one (1) of the eligibles has submitted proof of honorable discharge from the military service. This preference will only be administered in the event of tie scores. Documentation must be submitted at the time of application.


Seniority Points:

Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:

The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.

Appointment and Certification:

Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
