Job Description

The City of Renton's is recruiting for an experienced Building Electrical Inspector to join our Community and Economic department. This position works on a team that performs inspections at various stages of construction on industrial, commercial, multifamily, and single-family buildings to ensure compliance with laws, codes, standards and regulations.

If hired, your focus will be on electrical inspections but will also be trained to complete building inspections on as needed basis.

Some of the duties performed by this position include, but are not limited to :

Review and inspect construction and electrical plans and new electrical installations, components and wiring to ensure compliance with approved plans.
Inspect sites for erosion control, grading and soil excavation or other land modifications.
Write detailed correction notices for code violations discovered during inspections.
Investigate, respond to, and resolve compliance complaints concerning alleged violations of City ordinances.
Attend meetings and maintain current knowledge of code requirements and pertinent City ordinances.
Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance; work evening and / or weekend hours as required.

To be considered for this position, applicants must possess a valid general journey level electrician (EL01) certification from the State of Washington for a minimum of 4 years. ICC Building Inspector certification is also required within 12 months of hire. If you do not currently hold this certification the City of Renton will purchase the study materials and pay for one examination. Studying for this examination can be conducted during regular work hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Review and inspect construction and electrical plans, installations, and components to ensure compliance codes, regulations and City ordinances.

Conduct re-inspections to ensure all noted violations have been corrected.

Assist Fire Department personnel with electrical issues, concerns and questions during annual inspections.

Inspect sites for grading and soil excavation or other land modifications.

Inspect job site erosion control plans and note any observed violations. Make a visual survey of the construction site to determine if a licensed survey is to be required for setback verification.

Inspect nonstructural problems with building sites, such as surface water problems and inadequate access, and assure that they are corrected or referred to the appropriate City section.

Answer questions by telephone, in person or in the field regarding plan and accessibility requirements; interpret, apply and explain code requirements and ordinances.

Write detailed correction notices for code violations discovered during inspections; clarify policies and document activities.

Coordinate inspection activities with other City departments regarding certificates of occupancy; confer with electrical contractors, engineers, architects and designers on code questions and issues. Read special inspection reports for compliance and file reports.

Maintain inspection records and generate notices and other written materials.

Investigate, respond to, and resolve compliance complaints concerning alleged violations of City ordinances; communicate with complainant explain corrective actions.

Attend pre-construction meetings with engineers, architects, contractors, and other City staff as needed.

Review energy plans for compliance with State energy codes.

Inspect ductwork and vent hoods, heaters / air conditioners ensure compliance with City adopted building codes.

Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.

Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.

Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.

Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.

Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Perform other duties as assigned.

May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS :

Valid Washington State general journey level electrician (EL01) certification for a minimum of 4 years.

Possess or obtain at least one ICBO certification within one year of hire.

Valid Drivers' License.

Successful passing of a required driving record check.

Successful passing of a required background check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.

Move throughout City facilities and buildings.

Operate a computer and other office equipment.

Communicate with City employees and residents.

Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.

Climb and work from ladders, climb stairs.

Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :

Work is performed on job sites, indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

Exposure to high voltage wires, hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment.

Work evening and / or weekend hours as needed.

Noise level out in the field is moderately loud and noise level in the office is moderately quiet.

Night meetings may be required.
