STREETS LEVEL I OPERATOR GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESPerforms a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties related to the construction, maintenance, or repair of city roads, alleys, parking lots, signs, storm drains, and other City-owned property, and other jobs as necessarySUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the direct supervision of a Level III Operator or ForemanCATEGORY AND FLSA STATUSFull-time, regular, non-exemptESSENTIAL DUTIESOperates a variety of light equipment, such as pick-up, street sweeper, 4-wheelers or small tractors with push blade attachments, or commercial lawn mowing type equipment mounted with snow blower or broom attachments used for clearing snow off of sidewalks and pathways or sweeping sand, dump truck, sander, etc. as needed to construct, maintain and repair City streets and service systems. Performs a variety of manual tasks as needed; shovels dirt, gravel, and other materials, cleans up work sites; repairs bridges and drain pipes, etc.; constructs and maintains drainage ponds; performs winter snow removal. Help with street painting crew as needed. Mowing, weed eating, and general cleanup of City right of ways and City-owned properties, around signs, canal bridges, and intersections. Clearing snow off sidewalks, pathways, bridges, and other City-owned property. Making and / or spraying salt brine solution as needed. May operate some small tools such as compactors, jackhammers, asphalt / concrete saws, drills, hammers, etc. as the need arises. Performs daily vehicle inspections and maintenance on ALL equipment and vehicles being used; fills out all logs associated with such inspections and maintenance daily; reports any problems found with vehicles or equipment; maintains all fluid levels, including regular greasing, of all equipment daily. Responsible for maintaining and taking good care of ALL equipment being used. Notifies street foreman of any major repair needs or any regularly scheduled service needed. Assists in the preparation of ground for application of asphalt, concrete, or pre-mix materials to streets or roadways and assists in raking, smoothing, and tamping repaired patches. Works with hot asphalt for repairing, replacing, or new installation of roads, parking lots alleys or pathways, Sets up and removes barricades as needed to redirect traffic; assists in filling and placing sand bags during flood control. Performs related duties as required.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESQualifications1. Education and ExperienceA. Graduation from high school or GED with sufficient education and training background to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform the above and related dutiesAND B. Two (2) years of experience in the operation of light equipment as listed aboveORC. An equivalent combination of education and experience.2. Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesWorking knowledge of various municipal street maintenance equipment; working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to construction and equipment operation; working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations; some knowledge of construction methods and procedures typical to city streets and service systems; some knowledge of equipment parts and preventive maintenance for the same; some knowledge of masonry, and carpentry skills. Some Skill in the operation of simple to complex motorized equipment. Ability to perform manual tasks for sustained periods of time and in all-weather types; ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repair; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to read and understand blueprints and plans; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, the public and Supervisors.3. Special Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Idaho Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement and Air Brakes OR be able to obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • Must work on a twenty-four (24) hour on call basis for a week at a time. Be on a stand-by basis on occasion for severe weather alerts and snow removal.
  • Work overtime, holidays, and odd shifts to accomplish work as needed.
  • Required to become Flagger Certified and Traffic Control Trained.
  • Must be within a 30-minute response zone from the Street Department Building.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSTasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. (moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally moving up to 80 pounds). Talking, hearing and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, discriminating thinking.
