What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at City of Richfield, MN?
Under general supervision of Facility Manager, reporting directly to the Pool Supervisor, ensures that a clean and safe environment is provided for patrons. Monitors pool activities, enforces rules, takes action to correct unacceptable behavior and assists patrons.
HOURS
The pool will be open June 6 – August 20, 2025. Hours will vary, 28-40 hours per week. Schedule includes days and evenings Monday through Sunday. This position is seasonal in nature and therefore is a temporary position.
Overtime is paid for all hours worked more than 48 per workweek.
SEASONAL INCENTIVE
A $100 completion incentive will be awarded at the end of the season, to employees who have had a successful season and completed at least 100 hours of work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Watch for signs of trouble in the water and surrounding area in an alert and attentive way. Monitor waterslide riders and diving board users.
- Provide effective up-to-date lifesaving skills when the situation presents itself. Provide first aid for accident victims.
- Know, obey, and enforce pool rules, policies and procedures.
- Recognize problems and take corrective action.
- Thoroughly complete suspension and accident reports.
- Assist in admitting patrons into facility, greeting groups and explaining rules.
- Perform daily custodial duties to keep facility clean and safe.
- Assist in the daily operation, opening and closing procedures. Assist in admitting patrons into facility, greeting groups and explaining rules. Establish good rapport with both patrons and fellow staff. Treat all patrons fair and equally. Deal with customer issues.
- Attend orientation, staff and planning meetings.
- Work scheduled shifts, arrive on time ready to work.

COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of lifeguard procedures.
- Ability to perform water rescues and first aid using proper techniques.
- Good physical condition for swimming. Ability to complete 300 meter swim.
- Realization of the responsibility and alertness required as a lifeguard.
- Ability to recognize problems, remain calm, make decisions and take action.
- Ability to deal with the public and enforce rules.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with staff and patrons.
- Ability to work with others and accept suggestions.
- Demonstrate ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous Lifeguard experience
- Fluency in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese or other non-English language prevalent in the City of Richfield
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE
Needed before start date:
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid, CPR and AED certification card.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is primarily performed within a public swimming pool environment, where stamina is needed for considerable physical activity such as to perform moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment or children and adults who may require removal from the pool. Requires ability to work in the heat and sun.
The physical demands that are described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Must have the ability to:
- Must possess the mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull materials and supplies ranging from 20-60 lbs.
- Vision and hearing must be sufficient to see and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or by telephone and radio.
- Finger dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or to operate safety equipment.
- Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
