Safety begins at the crosswalk!  The City of Richmond Police Department is currently seeking individuals to assist with guiding our community safely across our City streets in the role of School Crossing Guard.

The School Crossing Guard assists school children safely across the street and reports incidents requiring possible police assistance.  

This is a part-time, on-call, and non-benefited position.

Regularly-assigned School Crossing Guards generally work a minimum of four hours to a maximum of seven hours per day, Monday through Friday.  The work hours usually are in the early morning and the early afternoon. Candidates will be paid for actual hours worked. Regular and prompt attendance is essential. Successful candidates must pass a background investigation prior to appointment.

The following list is intended to be illustrative in nature and does not necessarily represent the entire range of work duties expected of employees within the classification. Depending on the assigned area and the specific work of the department, duties may include, but are not limited to:   

  • Requesting school children to wait at curbing for safe crossing and to dismount from bicycles.
  • Halting traffic by hand signal and/or while holding a "stop" sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching vehicles.
  • Giving due consideration to the distance required to stop and the avoidance of unnecessary traffic congestion.
  • Escorting children safely across the street; signaling for traffic to resume.
  • Performing related duties as required.
Knowledge of:  State and local traffic laws and basic safety practices.
 
Ability to:  Follow oral and written directions.  Deal effectively and courteously with associates, children, parents, school employees, and the general public.  Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, using proper grammar and spelling.  Use accurate judgment of traffic flow, speed and direction of travel; prioritize activities; use "stop" sign, reflector vest, and traffic signal functions. Candidate must have good eyesight and be free from color blindness. 

Education/Experience:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade in school.
 
COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement:  The City’s policy is that all persons hired on or after October 18, 2021, must be fully vaccinated, including the booster, for COVID-19. New employees will be required to provide proof of complete vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation before employment may commence. Work Environment:  This job is performed outside and is subject to exposure to the following elements:  heat, cold, and wet conditions; job involves walking and standing for long periods of time; constant seeing and hearing; is subject to exposure to environmental and/or physical hazards.

Desirable Qualification: 
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to maintain ethical standards at all times
Additional Requirements:
  • No felony convictions.
  • No use of the following drugs within the past three (3) years: Cocaine, Hallucinogens, LSD, Heroin,  Methamphetamine,  MDMA (Ecstasy),  Psilocybin (Mushrooms).
  • Successful candidates must pass a thorough background investigation, which may include a criminal history check for job-related convictions, fingerprinting, a polygraph test, a credit check, and a check of drug use history.
  • Must be able to qualify to use protective respirator equipment based on passing a specialized physical examination by the hire date, and maintain certification.

Application Screening:  All completed applications will be evaluated based on job-related qualifications criteria, which could include desirable qualifications and the specific needs of the hiring department.  The applications for candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be submitted to the Police Department and remain active for six (6) months. As vacancies occur, better qualified candidates may be invited to continue in the selection process and will be contacted for an interview by the Police Department.
