Description
The City of Richmond, Department of Public Utilities is seeking a qualified Maintenance Worker to maintain city property, equipment, and facilities. As assigned, work may include: routine and heavy cleaning; setting up for special events/projects; performing minor repairs for an assigned area of responsibility; assisting skilled trades staff; operating a variety of tools and light equipment; maintaining cleanliness of work area, tools, and equipment; and following safety policies and procedures.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Cutting Grass, manual labor with shovels, rakes and using pneumatic, gas, & electric hands tools

Directing Traffic, serve as spotter for drivers, securing worksite.
- Painting, cleaning & stocking items with forklift
- Assisting with storm water inlet cleaning and repairs, maintenance roadside ditches & drainage easement
- Assist with winter maintenance & city wide emergencies
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Education sufficient for satisfactory job performance
- No prior work experience
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 year of work experience
- Flagger Card: VDOT Basic Work Zone or ATSSA’s Flagger Certification
- A general understanding of construction and/or maintenance operations
- Experience cutting grass and vegetation maintenance operating a zero-turn mower, chainsaw & weed eater, roadway construction and general labor duties, are a plus
- Experience working successfully in a team environment.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Some positions may require a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, lift, grasp, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently balance, stoop, crouch, reach, pull, finger, feel, and talk; and occasionally climb, kneel, and crawl. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
