The City of Richmond, Department of Planning & Development Review is currently seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector –Building to work independently in conducting a range of trade specific inspections on residential and commercial buildings as well as managing specific projects related to these types of code inspections.
Duties include but are not limited to
This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed.

The City of Richmond, Department of Planning & Development Review is currently seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector –Building to work independently in conducting a range of trade specific inspections on residential and commercial buildings as well as managing specific projects related to these types of code inspections.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Performs routine inspections of new construction, alteration, and repairs of buildings and other structures. Inspects commercial, residential, and industrial buildings to determine whether materials used meet code compliance.
- Prepares daily reports of inspections. Logs all inspections on a daily basis and notifies contractors of any code violations. Submits reports of violations and issues written or verbal orders for correction of same. Makes re-inspection of premises to determine correction of violations.
- Inspect new and existing buildings for building code compliance
- Assist contractors and customers with building code questions and city processes for permitting, plan review, and inspections
- Perform other related duties as required
This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed.
Qualifications, Special Certifications And Licenses
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of standard work-unit specific tools/equipment used for construction, electrical work, etc.
- Virginia codes and ordinances;
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Health and Safety Code; construction scheduling, practices, and methods; and, Architectural design and construction methods
- Skill in computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions; manage time;
- Exercise independent and sound judgment, discretion, and initiative in interpreting and applying established procedures, guidelines, and rules; Manage situations requiring fairness and firmness.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Three years of experience in area of assignment
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
- Valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
- Completion of a General and Residential Code Inspection certification in area of assignment within one year of hire date
- Certification may include one of the following Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development certifications: Building General and Building Residential Inspector, Electrical General and Electrical Residential Inspector, Mechanical General and Mechanical Residential Inspector, Plumbing General and Plumbing Residential Inspector, Fire Protection General Inspector and Elevator General Inspector
