What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Maintenance Specialist position at City of Richmond?
The Department of General Services is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Fleet Maintenance Specialist in the Fleet Management Division. The incumbent is responsible for completing mechanical repairs, maintenance, and inspections on City vehicles to include, but not limited to light, heavy duty and off-road equipment.
- Performing general inspections on vehicles and equipment and documenting discrepancies
- Repairing and replacing vehicle parts such as engines, alternators, carburetors, batteries, tires, brakes, pumps, transmissions, gas tanks, headlights, wipers, fuel systems, suspensions, and other similar equipment
- Performing routine preventive maintenance on vehicles such as oil changes, filter changes and lubrication, and other routine maintenance
- Assisting in the training and mentoring of junior technicians in proper diagnosing and repair techniques
- Making service calls and repairs to vehicles and equipment in the field
- Consulting technical reference documentation such as manufacturer and parts manuals for technical information necessary for repairs
- Preparing files, maintaining work logs and maintenance sheets
- Conducting state inspections and preventive maintenance inspections
- Logging time and information into computer database on a daily basis
- Repairing and troubleshooting hydraulic systems
- Other related duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED
- Four (4) years of automotive maintenance experience related to assignment
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
- Six (6) months or more of heavy duty and off-road equipment maintenance repairs
- Two (2) years or more of proven professional light duty repairs
- Ideal candidate must have full mechanical tool set
- Ability to obtain a Virginia State Inspection License within six (6) months of hire
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Required to have a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire
- Required to have a valid Commonwealth of Virginia commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record within six (6) months of hire (class B)
- Required to have a Virginia Motor Vehicle Inspection License or the ability to obtain this license within one year of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, push, pull, lift, finger (picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palms, talk, see, and hear. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, walk, feel and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and fingers. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
