What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance and Operations Crew Chief position at City of Richmond?

The City of Richmond, Department of Public Utilities, is seeking a qualified Maintenance and Operations Crew Chief to lead crews that performs routine maintenance and repairs to assure safe and proper operation of the City of Richmond Sanitary and Combined Sewer infrastructure with limited supervision within the Wastewater Collections Division. The incumbent will provide lead direction to work crews or teams including establishing schedules and making assignments; review/inspect work products; train other employees; assist lower level staff with complex tasks; make performance evaluation recommendations; gather maintenance data; maintain and update databases; maintain files and records; prepare reports; monitor maintenance requirements; and make repair recommendations.
  • Supervising equipment operators and pipeline technicians that maintain and repair wastewater infrastructure
  • Assembling tools, materials and equipment for daily work assignments; transporting personnel to and from work site
  • Driving and operating small equipment and machinery
  • Performing routine maintenance inspections of piping systems
  • Responding to work orders
  • Maintaining equipment, machinery, or vehicles in good working order while observing established safety protocols and procedures for safe operation

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of college or specialized training in area of focus
  • Two years of equipment operation/driving experience or maintenance experience in the area related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Five or more years of experience in Supervision within the Stormwater/Wastewater and the Utility/Construction Fields
  • Three years of Asset management experience.
 
 

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some assignments may require a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, pull, finger, talk, see, hear and use repetitive motion; frequently feel, grasp, frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance, stoop, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
