General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate semiskilled work performing general upkeep and maintenance at City parks, facilities and grounds and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Park Assistant Superintendent.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains buildings, grounds, athletic fields, tracks, and playgrounds, including painting, mowing grass, trimming/cutting shrubs and trees, landscaping, seeding/planting, spraying, raking leaves, and removing trash and debris.
  • Cleans and services rest rooms and collects trash in park facilities, including shelters and rental buildings.  Assists with opening and closing restroom facilities at beginning and end of season, adjusting water supply accordingly.
  • Inspects and maintains park facilities and equipment, including repairing/replacing picnic tables, fences and playground equipment, replacing light bulbs and filters, and assists in performing minor plumbing and electrical repairs as necessary.
  • Performs maintenance and upkeep duties in the Downtown area and at the City building, including sweeping, cleaning, collecting trash, emptying trash cans, shoveling and salting sidewalks, mowing, trimming, pruning, fertilizing, hanging decorations, replacing light bulbs, painting, and making minor repairs as needed.
  • Operates various trucks/equipment/tools in the performance of duties, including backhoe, bobcat, dump truck, ditch witch, gator, stump grinder, chipper, bucket truck, snowplow, tractors, mowers, weed eaters, hedgers, trimmers, pruners, tiller, edger, leaf blower, chain saws, power drills, paint sprayers and other hand/power tools as needed.
  • Assists with other projects, building, general maintenance needs as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of the handling of tools, equipment, and machinery used in the trade; working knowledge of the safe operation of tools and equipment; working knowledge of city and department policies and procedures; working knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing systems; working knowledge of cleaning procedures; ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, often under time pressure, and on several tasks at the same time; ability to perform arithmetic calculations and read/interpret detailed prints, sketches, specifications, technical manuals, instruments, gauges and dials; ability to use and operate the tools of the trade; ability to perform replacements and repairs ability to operate and use standard office equipment; ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED required.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and pushing or pulling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
