The City of Richmond, Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities, is seeking a highly qualified and energetic candidate to fill the position of Recreation Program Instructor in the Recreation Division. This position will report to a Facility and Program Supervisor.
The position will report to the Recreation Center Supervisor who oversees the recreation center. This position involves the daily operations of a recreation facility including front desk operations, program coordination, and implementation, and other logistics for recreational, social, and special event programs provided by the center.
  • Planning, implementing, leading, and evaluating various recreational, athletic, leisure, and social programs, activities, and events.
  • Teaching, instructing, coaching, and/or leading various site activities as assigned.
  • Enforcing safety rules, standards, and procedures.
  • Resolving disputes and providing guidance and support to program and center participants.
  • Consulting with parents, coaches, teachers, volunteers, participants, and community members on program implementation and evaluation.
  • Helping to maintain a clean and safe area within the facility and on the external grounds.
  • Preparing room setups, playing fields, etc. for programs and activities.
  • Assisting with communication and advertisement of programs and events to the community.
  • Providing participant transportation to and from scheduled events in city vehicles.
  • Organizing and participating in meetings.
  • Assisting in the recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision of staff and volunteers.
  • General clerical and office tasks such as putting together reports, responding to emails, etc.
  • Communication both orally and in writing
  • Providing internal and external customer service
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience:
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • 1 year of recreation program experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet minimum qualifications of the classification.
  • Proficient computer skills
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
  • Associate’s or higher degree in Parks and Recreation, Sport Management, Education, Business Administration, or a similar field.
  • 2 or more years or recreation programming experience
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful planning and implementation of a variety of recreational and leisure programs and events.
  • Proficient computer skills

  • Computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, and RecTrac (or other recreation management software).

  • Basic rules or various sports and gym games; 
  • Objectives and principles of public recreation; 

Skills (some combination of the following):
  • Demonstrating good customer service skills with individuals from various demographics, backgrounds, and ages; 
  • Building relationships with coworkers, staff, community members, participants, customers, and volunteers; 
  • Supervising staff and volunteers;
  • Managing projects; 
Abilities (some combination of the following):
  • Planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating recreational activities and special events; 
  • Written and oral communication skills;
  • Multi- tasking; 
  • Working in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Utilizing resources efficiently; 
  • Analytical skills; 
  • Working both independently and as a team;

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly balance, stand, walk, work with one's fingers, talk, see, hear; frequently kneel, use repetitive motions, lift, reach, or stoop; or occasionally crouch, push, pull, climb, or grasp. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work (exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects), but may differ based on area of focus.

Salary : $44,616 - $59,530
