General Definition of Work
Performs manual work repairing city streets and alleys, patching chips and cracks, spreading road materials such as gravel and salt, performing snow removal, conducting equipment and vehicle checks, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Street Commissioner.

Essential Functions
Operates light and medium tools and equipment in the repair and maintenance of city streets and City-owned property.
Maintains city streets and alleys; clears access rocks and debris; seals cracks and chips; patches holes; hauls, shovels, and spreads road materials.
Performs snow removal and spreads salt on roads seasonally.
Excavates and cleans ditches and drainage sites; pours concrete and installs culverts.
Maintains roadsides and rights-of-way; cuts and removes fallen trees; clears leaves, brushes, and weeds.
Services and maintains vehicles and equipment; checks fuel gauges and warning lights; ensures proper functionality.
Performs flagging and traffic control at work sites as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of materials, methods and practices essential to maintenance and repair of streets and related facilities; knowledge of the maintenance methods and practices as applied to street construction, maintenance and repair; knowledge of applicable state, federal and local ordinances, codes, laws, rules and regulations, legislative issues and policies and procedures; knowledge of work zone safety; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools; skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to perform manual labor; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED required.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
Special Requirements
Valid commercial driver's license in the State of Indiana.
