POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Utilities Technician receives general supervision from the Public Works Administrative Supervisor and works with independence and initiative. The Utilities Technician provides a variety of technical and engineering support functions of limited to moderate complexity for the City’s water and stormwater systems. Duties include conducting inspections of utility infrastructure and equipment to ensure they are functioning safely and efficiently, using technical knowledge and tools to identify the cause of malfunctions, and adhering to safety protocols and regulations when working with utility systems.

 

Examples of essential functions for the water and stormwater systems include:

 

    1. Review plans and specifications for private development and capital projects for compliance with water and stormwater standards and provide summarized findings.
    2. Perform general technical and engineering tasks involved in the design, review and inspection of capital and development engineering and construction projects including water and stormwater systems.
    3. Perform utility location services.
    4. Perform routine geospatial data maintenance by digitizing, converting as-built information from AutoCAD format to GIS, and converting data from other formats.
    5. Evaluate data sources and prepare custom maps, graph reports and other documentation.
    6. Develop, manage, and maintain utility mapping data, including spatial data layers, geodatabase, attribute data, and metadata.
    7. Provide assistance to construction inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems related to utilities during construction.
    8. Maintain the asset management program and the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for utilities.

 

The Utilities Technician is a regular, non-exempt position with a normal work schedule of 40 hours a week. The position is covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between Teamsters Local 58 and the City of Ridgefield.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the level of required knowledge and abilities may be considered. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

  1. Education: Equivalent to an Associates of Arts degree with course work in engineering or related fields from an accredited college is preferred.
  2. Experience: One year experience with engineering standards, city code, construction inspection and plan review related to utilities. 
  3. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of civil engineering techniques applicable to the job duties as well as public works design and construction practices. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems related to utilities. Take initiative in recommending changes in work methods to improve service delivery and improve overall operating efficiencies. Ability to use a computer to perform engineering tasks related to the job duties. Knowledge of and ability to use GIS.
  4. Certifications: Possession of a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.

The City also provides life insurance at two times your annual salary, long-term disability insurance, flexible spending account options and an Employee Assistance Program.

Leave benefits currently include vacation accrual up to 80 hours during your first year of employment, 11 paid holidays per year, 3 additional paid floating holidays, and 8 hours accrued sick leave each month.

Enrollment in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust Fund is automatic.
