What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Library Assistant 1 position at City of River Falls?
This is a year-round, part-time position.
This position is for 15 hours per week, with shifts varying based on the library’s needs. Shifts will be approximately 3 hours long and scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. The position requires availability 5 days per week, including a rotating Saturday shift from 10am -2:15pm approximately once every six weeks.
This position is often the first point of contact for the library, providing patron assistance at the service desks. Performs a wide variety of library service activities, answering patron questions that relate to circulation, basic reference, basic adult and children’s readers’ advisory, basic technology assistance. This position hosts pre-panned programs and engages in some limited program planning under the supervision of a Librarian. Evening and weekend hours are required.
- Complies with established rules of operation, procedures and policies of the City of River Falls and River Falls Public Library
- Maintains confidentiality of information regarding patrons’ use of library materials, programs and services
- Creates and updates library accounts which involves data entry of patron records, and coding by residence for reimbursement by governing bodies outside of the City of River Falls
- Performs routine library circulation procedures, using automated system, including checking items out, renewing items and placing holds
- Receives customer payments for billed or faxed items, applies payments to customer account, make change and issue receipts
- Reserves meeting rooms and equipment
- Circulates equipment, collect equipment deposits
- Provides information about library programs, services and resources
- Answers patron questions (including by phone and in-person)
- Answers a wide range of reference and directional questions
- Makes patrons aware of and helps them access the library’s physical and digital resources
- Helps patrons assess credibility of sources, particularly online
- Provides reader’s advisory
- Provides instruction on the functions of the online catalog, use of self-check machine, and item location to library patrons
- Assists patrons with library equipment (fax, copy, scan, print and wireless print)
- Answers general computer questions and assists with troubleshooting
- Helps patrons print email and open attachments from a variety of providers
- Assists with opening and closing procedures
- Plans programs under the supervision of a Librarian.
- Hosts programs
- Other tasks as assigned

- Knowledge of evaluation tools to assess credibility of sources
- Knowledge of Reader’s Advisory tools
- Proficiency in Office 365 (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook)
- Operate office equipment including copier, scanner and fax machines, phones, and computers.
- Proficiency in library software (Sierra and MORE catalog)
- Basic knowledge of the Automated Material Handling system
