The Public Works Maintenance Worker performs skilled tasks involving the operation of light and heavy equipment, maintenance of parks, streets, buildings, and storm sewers, as well as manual labor. The position requires working efficiently and responsibly to maintain public property and infrastructure while considering the views, concerns, and safety of residents. Prompt and thorough execution of assignments according to established routines is critical.
- Perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction tasks using safe and proper methods.
- Maintain public streets, right-of-ways, parks, buildings, and equipment.
- Conduct inspections, operate equipment, and perform basic maintenance of public works equipment.
- Perform tasks such as:
- Facility, grounds, and pool maintenance
- Street sweeping
- Snow plowing, salting, and sanding
- Paint striping
- Stormwater and storm sewer repair
- Complete building and facility repair projects, including park groundskeeping tasks (e.g., mowing, trimming trees and shrubs) and maintaining City-wide structures (e.g., benches, sculptures, monuments).
- Assist other City departments as needed.
- Contribute to strategies for municipal facility maintenance, repair, and construction.
- Identify potential issues and recommend effective solutions.
- Expertise in maintenance, repair, and construction of public works facilities.
- Proficiency in the safe operation, maintenance, and minor servicing of vehicles and equipment.
- Skilled in the use of light and heavy equipment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Sound decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Competence in maintaining accurate records of schedules, equipment, and supplies.
- Familiarity with technology used in public works operations.
- Flexibility to adapt to varied assignments, work schedules, and overtime requirements.
Minimum
- High school diploma or GED.
- 3-5 years of experience in parks, streets, or public works maintenance.
- Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within three months).
- Must be available for snow plowing and other emergency call-outs on a 24/7 basis; respond time within 1 hour.
- Must be available to work week-long standby hours and scheduled weekends.
- Must become a certified pool operator within 1 year of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Regularly required to use hands for handling objects, tools, and controls.
- Ability to assume various body positions, including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, as required by the job, at times frequently and occasionally as needed.
- Work may involve exposure to:
- Moving mechanical parts
- Heights
- Outdoor weather conditions (extreme cold, heat, wet, and humid conditions).
- Occasionally required to lift/move up to 75 pounds.
