Position Summary:
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, performs a variety of maintenance or construction tasks which often require physical strength and effort and a relatively high level of complexity and responsibility. Operates various hand or small power tools and pieces of equipment to perform activities. Must be able to work overtime with little to no pre-notice, be on call for a week at a time and be available for after hour emergencies.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains and sanitary sewers; performs tasks in the maintenance of parks, street, city buildings and facilities.
2. This position participates in the repair and installation of water mains, new service branches, hydrants and intakes.
3. Locates valves and blowouts in the water and sewer mains so that repairs can be made and supervises and participates in the repair of valves, the operation of water and sewer pumps and making of taps.
4. Participates, and may occasionally serve as a lead worker in the repairing of broken service lines, removal, setting and resetting meters; repairing leaking meters; responds to emergency calls of leaks or breaks of mains.
5. Performs other duties related to the city streets such as erecting signs and barricades, clearing debris from accidents, plowing and salting.
6. Participates, and may occasionally serve as a lead worker over seasonal employees, in sprinkling and mowing of grounds, removal of trash and debris, transplant and replacement of trees and shrubbery on municipal property.
7. Participates, and may occasionally serve as a lead worker over seasonal employees, in erecting park equipment and fences, maintaining all playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball
diamonds, swimming pools, as well as, painting, repairing and performing electrical and plumbing maintenance of buildings and facilities.
8. Operates light and heavy equipment engaged in lot and park mowing, water, sewer line and street maintenance.
9. Participates in maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, cleaning alleys, installing street markers and maintaining drainage ditches.
10. Participates in operating and maintaining sanitary storm drainage pumps.
11. Answers complaints from the public concerning the need for street or sewer maintenance.
12. Estimates material and equipment needs for jobs, maintains work, time and material records. Assists in making recommendations for improving buildings, equipment and facilities.
13. Reads water meters and maintain proper records. Performs general maintenance of four lift stations.
14. Participates, and may occasionally serve as a lead worker over seasonal employees, in the maintenance and repair of all buildings, equipment and facilities.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:
· Must have a valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's License and obtain a CDL “B” within first 30-days of employment.
· Must obtain a commercial Pesticide core license with right of way before the six month probation period ends.
· A high school diploma or the equivalent. One year of mechanical or maintenance experience in an equivalent position or any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
· Water Distribution Certificate is desirable.
Knowledge of methods necessary to maintain and repair buildings, equipment and facilities, as well as proper use of tools, materials, equipment and machinery used in this position.
· Knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, commercial boilers and ventilation systems.
· Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with the public and other employees.
· Ability to work irregular hours and split shifts.
· Ability to drive heavy equipment.
· Ability to understand and follow instructions and carry them out independently.
