The City Manager's Student Intern is a paid internship program designed for graduate or advanced degree student who are interested in pursuing a career in public service, learning about U.S. local government processes, and/or applying academic knowledge and skills in a practical manner within various public service professions.
Essential Job Functions
Education
Currently in a Masters or PhD. Program. Public Administration, Public Policy or related field of study is preferred.
Good Academic Standing with at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 rating scale.
Certifications
May require valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Subject to a complete criminal history background check and pass a drug screen with acceptable results. May be subject to DMV driving record review as required by amount of work related driving, specified by support responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions
- Assist the Assistant to the City Manager and City Manager in partner/stakeholder analysis and evaluation.
- Prepare program reports on various Council Member initiatives (including the Mayor and City Manager).
- Assist budget management teams in producing budget documents, and carrying out financial analysis and planning.
- Assist in building partnerships with stakeholders and the public on different community wide programs and activities.
- Assist Director Finance in carrying out research and analysis on billing and collection related issues being faced by the public, and devise strategies to overcome them to improve service and delivery.
- Attend City Council meetings and community meetings to collect feedback from the public on various issues.
- Perform a variety of tasks, including project management activities, in carrying out the direction of the City Manager on a wide range of municipal issues.
- Assist the City Manager and Assistant City Managers in working with designated departments towards the achievement of departmental objectives and the objectives of the City government as a whole.
- Carry out other program and budget management related duties as required.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to apply coursework to City of Roanoke programs or projects.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to a variety of audiences
- Ability to organize a variety of assignments simultaneously to meet deadlines
- A working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
