Duties and Responsibilities:
· Manage Projects: Oversee transportation planning, engineering, systems management, and maintenance projects related to streets, sidewalks, and traffic signals.
· Capital Improvement Programs: Develop, recommend, review, and monitor municipal and regional transportation capital improvement programs.
· Representation: Represent the city in professional meetings, workshops, and seminars.
· Consultant Selection: Oversee the selection of consultants and evaluate long-range needs for transportation.
Typical Qualifications:
· Educational Background: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Planning, Public Administration, or a related field. PE is preferred but not required.
· Experience: 7 to 10 years of progressive responsibility in transportation planning. Strong knowledge of traffic control devices, traffic signal systems, and traffic safety principles. Proficiency in traffic analysis software and CAD.
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead Transportation Planning: Develop and implement transportation policies and programs that prioritize safety for people of all ages, abilities, and incomes.
· Innovative Solutions: Foster a healthier, cleaner environment through innovative bus, bike, pedestrian, micro-mobility, and first-last mile options.
· Traffic Management: Develop and direct the implementation of standards for maintaining and operating traffic signs, signals, striping, and marking.
· Project Management: Manage complex projects including traffic signal maintenance, roadway safety enhancements, innovative programs, transportation demand management, and private property development review.
· Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues and the community to promote multi-modal transportation.
· Budget Management: Lead initiatives to plan, develop, and submit applications for Commonwealth and federally funded programs focused on maintaining and constructing transportation infrastructure within the city. Including collaboration with VDOT district staff, the City Engineer, the Director of Planning, and planning and development partners from neighboring localities.
Salary : $82,906 - $120,000
