The City of Roanoke is looking for a dedicated and skilled professional to join our Athletic Field Maintenance crew. As part of this high-performing team, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining top-quality athletic fields and park spaces, ensuring they remain safe, vibrant, and well-groomed for community use.
What You’ll Do:Perform specialized turf and general park maintenance alongside a team of experienced Maintenance Technicians and Seasonal Workers.
Operate various motorized and gas-powered equipment, including:
Mowers: Steiner, Zero-Turn, and Walk-Behind models.
Small Equipment: Weedeaters, edgers, backpack blowers.
Heavy & Light Machinery: Used for snow removal and other seasonal needs.
Assist with special events, emergency response, and snow removal, which may require occasional night and weekend shifts.
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED.
1–3 years of experience in athletic turf maintenance and management or a combination of relevant education and experience.
Licensing & Certifications:
Preferred: Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Required: Ability to obtain a Class B CDL learner’s permit and full license within 12 months of hire
Preferred: Registered Technician Spraying License, Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification, and Fertilizer Applicator Certification.
Required: Ability to obtain all three within 18 months of hire.

SUMMARY
Participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of athletic field and turf grass maintenance, park restroom cleaning, trash removal, and general park landscape maintenance. Performs skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of several types of motorized equipment or maintenance of facilities and/or equipment
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position reports to a Maintenance Tech IV for daily assignments or the Maintenance Tech III in the absence of the crew leader. Will on occasion assit with the supervision of part-time staff or volunteers as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on the area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.
Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader and other medium to heavy equipment
Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
Operates cranes, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repairs
Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of a closed-circuit television unit designed for stormwater infrastructure inspections.
Gather and report work site information from inspections
Performs tasks such as pesticide application and asphalt leveling
Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment
Operates all equipment, both light and heavy in snow removal
Paints walls and materials from surface preparation to application and finishing
Performs minor repair of buildings, doors, windows and floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items
Uses and maintains spray painting and lawn care equipment for maintaining athletic fields
When not operating equipment, performs general laboring tasks such collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties
Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings.
May supervise crew in absence of supervisor
May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
