The City of Roanoke is seeking a RESET Outreach Worker to assist in the coordination of activities and programs for at-risk youth.  Transport youth to and from various appointments and functions. Plan and attend social and recreational activities. Serve as advocate for the youth in securing social services, education, and job related opportunities. Perform needs assessment for youth and family members and provides information about services. Makes appropriate referrals and maintains detailed documentation of all contact with youth. This is a 2 year grant position.

This is a non-exempt position.

Working as part of a team to recruit and support the efforts of RESET (Rapid Engagement of Support in the Event of Trauma) by:

  • Networking and coordinating programs with various organizations, schools, courts, probation offices, Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), community residents, and grass roots organization to gather resources and information to offer the youth and their affected family members; 
  • Conducting outreach services to juveniles and their families that include coordinating mentoring, tutoring, counseling, and after-school programs
  • Working as part of a team to organize and hold events that draw in and involve local residents and partners
  • Working as part of a team to support and sustain community-led action around issues relating to youth services
  • Working in different environments (office-based and the community), at times best suited to the community (including some evenings and weekends)
  • Planning and attending social and recreational activities for the targeted youth
  • Developing and sustaining positive relationships with a range of people, including residents, community leaders, local groups and organizations
  • Providing support and referring? basic resources (food, clothing, job training, mental health support, medical, job training etc.).
  • Creating and maintaining case notes and participant files to ensure that all reporting requirements are adhered to with every client interaction.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned

Education and Experience

 •    High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.  

Certifications/Licenses

 •    Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record according to the City Criteria.

Job Knowledge 

Intermediate knowledge to perform most work in normal situations. Comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.  

Reading 

Intermediate-Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, and thesauruses.  

Writing 

Basic-Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.  

Math 

Basic-Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement.  

Communication Skills 

Decisions regarding interpretation of existing policies may be made.   Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.   Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.  

Independence and Decision-Making 

Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices.  The assignment is usually reviewed frequently.  

Technical Skills 

Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.   

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

This position has no responsibility for direction or supervision of others.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Work is light in nature, exerting up to 20 lbs. Occasionally, 10 lbs. Frequently, or negligible amounts constantly or requires walking or standing to a significant degree.   Requires adequate vision, hearing and talking to use a computer, telephone and communicating effectively with others.  

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 •    Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time. 

•    Regular and predictable attendance is expected.  

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE 

Typically requires use of standard office equipment, including computer and related hardware and software, and any other equipment as appropriate or required.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

The work is typically performed in the community.  The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task; and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.

Salary : $44,325
