The Building Official will carry out all responsibilities in accordance with clearly established departmental policies, procedures, City Codes, Ordinances, State and Federal regulations. Interfaces extensively with external builders, engineers, architects, developers, and sub-contractors. Frequently interfaces with City Management, Director of Planning & Development, and other City employees.
Essential Functions:

- Reviews residential and commercial plans for compliance with City’s Zoning Ordinance, applicable International Codes, applicable National Electrical Code, other City ordinances, model codes, and State and federal requirements; compile written reports of plan reviews.
- Reviews sign permit applications for compliance with the City’s Sign Ordinance,applicable International Codes, applicable National Electrical Code, other City ordinances, and State and federal requirements; compile written reports of plan reviews.
- Reviews driveway permit applications and flood development permit applications for compliance with the City’s ordinances, and State and federal requirements.
- Conduct on-site inspections, as required by the City’s Zoning Ordinance, applicable International Codes, applicable National Electrical Code, other City ordinances, model codes and ordinances, file written reports of each inspection.
- Receive and evaluate applications and plans for completeness to City’s Zoning Ordinance, applicable International Codes, applicable National Electrical Code, other City ordinances, and model codes and ordinances.
- Inspect for compliance and enforce the City’s Zoning Ordinance, Sign Ordinance, applicable International Code, applicable National Electrical Code, and other codes, while communicating effectively in writing with property owners.
- Issues releases, permits, and certificates.
- Is the assigned staff support to the Building Standards Commission, including but not limited to, agendas, working with code enforcement and attorney, staff reports, cases, preparation of packets, delivery of packets to the Commission, attendance of Commission meetings, Orders of Record.
- Write compliance letters and investigate sites for building, zoning, and sign code violations in assistance with the Code Compliance Division. Including assisting other departments in disposition of cases before the courts.
- Essential member of the flood hazard prevention program.
- Prepare reports for Department, City Manager, and City Council as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Required to report for work punctually and maintain positive attendance.
Minimum Education, Experience, & Qualifications:
- High School diploma/GED required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in building inspections preferably in a municipal setting, or in the building or construction industry.
- State of Texas Master Plumber License or Trade License (electrical, plumbing, or mechanical).
- Valid Texas Class C Driver License with driving record acceptable by the City.
- Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) accreditation or the ability to earn a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) accreditation in accordance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within six (6) months of hiring.
- Certified Building Official (CBO) certification by the International Code Council (ICC) or ability to obtain within the first twelve (12) months.
- International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Building Inspector / Residential Building Inspector or ability to obtain within the first (6) months of employment.
- Any equivalent combination of education or certification, training, or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
